Opie and all his friends are trying to sell salve. This will give them an opportunity to win a pony. But the townspeople aren't buying any and the company is playing hardball with them. Leave it to Barney and Gomer to move in an screw everything up. It is funny enough but there is some justice.

Good Old AG Comedy Showcases Barney and Gomer
scottschada@yahoo.com8 November 2023
I have written a number of reviews of the Andy Griffith Show, but this one is close to my heart, because it brought back memories of the products promoted to kids to sell, including salve and greeting cards.

Ads directed at enterprising kids were placed in the closing pages of popular magazines such as "Boys' Life". I know I tried (once) to sell greeting cards for a company in Elmira, New York. Of course my parents and closest relatives saved me by buying the minimum required.

The reaction of the "executive" at the Miracle Salve company upon hearing Barney and Gomer's routine as to how their salve cures mange on dogs is one of the best scenes of the show.

Overall, a great episode of the pure comedy type that many go to Andy Griffith for.

Always got a big kick out of this episode

The highlight scene is Barney & Gomer in the Miracle Salve office. Always loved Barney disguising his voice as Dr Pendyke. Imbecile Gomer is utterly mesmerized by it. Usually a TAGS carnival barker Lewis Charles here is one of the Miracle Salve shysters.

Lots of breaches of logic as usual. Why didn't Aunt Bee just refuse the shipment of salve? Why transfer the salve to the courthouse? Barney dealing with the salve trying to sell it when he should be working on the clock. All tied in to a funny and ridiculous epilogue.

Funny but flawed logic again

Warning: Spoilers
T's fun to see Barney and Gomer doing something silly instead of Barney deputizing Gomer as usual and then getting mad at him. I remember selling different products when I was young too. We sold candy, cookies, magazines and even light bulbs!!

We all know these episodes had many different writers and continuity was not important to them. From Barney's middle name to the distance to Mt. Pilot and Raleigh- it varies. They also didn't hesitate to be illogical often. This episode is no exception. For instance, When Barney and Gomer disguised themselves and went into the Miracle Salve office, they never paid for anything NOR did they sign anything. So, why are they on the hook? This is true even without the deception. Andy would be the first to assure everyone that it's not binding. But he acts like they are legally stuck with all that salve.

Technically, they could do anything with it since it wasn't ordered, paid for or connected to Andy, Barney or Gomer. They could just sell it for 5¢ a jar or give it away.
