"Alias" meets "The X-Files"
1 January 2010 | by See all my reviews

Sydney gets bitten on the neck by a CIA agent who was infected by a mysterious and powerful hallucinogenic drug. Pretty soon Sydney starts developing disturbing symptoms herself, so Jack and Vaughn must locate the antidote before the situation gets out of control. Though not nearly as good as the last episode that examined Sydney's mind so much, "Conscious" from season 3, "Nocturne" is better than all the previous season 4 episodes except the two-hour premiere. The most fascinating parts of it are the hallucinations, which seem to be directly connected to her inner fears: Vaughn kissing another woman, Sloane betraying her again, Jack hating her for reminding him of Irina - and apparently Sydney doesn't like bugs much, either. These scenes are very well-done, and so are Dixon's scenes with Sloane, where Dixon expresses his distrust in the honesty of Sloane's "reformation". Ron Rifkin and Carl Lumbly finally get some juicy material to work with besides barking / listening to orders and congratulations. This episode also has one of the funniest credits I've seen at the end: Ryan Gentry as "Not Vaughn"! Can you imagine someone asking him about his participation in "Alias"? "So who did you play?" - "Not Vaughn" - "Yeah, OK, I know that, but who DID you play?"....and so on. *** out of 4.
