Only the first minutes of this TV episode gave me confirmation that this story was not unknown for me. I recognized the famous John Ford's SEVEN WOMEN, starring Anne Bancroft. This time, Jan Sterling has the Dr Cartwright's character, played several years later by Bancroft. Because the Ford's last feature was shot in 1967. So this episode, made in the early sixties, inspired the long film. The screen writer is not mentioned during the credits: opening or final ones. So, you have to already know the Ford's film to know that. But anyone who has seen the long feature can't forget it.
It takes place in China, far from the big cities, lost in the country side, in a missionary community, where a bunch of women have to deal with savage hordes of brigands, in order to save native women and children from the barbarism.
The Dr Cartwright's character is absolutely outstanding, brave and courageous, probably the most powerful one seen in a movie. Sterling is almost as good as Bancroft in John Ford's film.
