Storyline

Tommy and Tuppence decide to go to a fancy dress ball after reading what they interpret as a coded message in the personals column of the newspaper. What they find is a dead woman, stabbed in the chest. The woman is identified as Lady Vere Merivale, a well-known socialite. Inspector Marriott arrests Captain Bingo Hale, Lady Merivale's lover, but the Beresfords believe him to be innocent.
