This one is a more blatant allegory of the American communist witch hunts.

One of Robin Hood's men slips off to see his mother. He leaves her with a bit of treasure that he stole and did not share with the outlaws.

The locals in her village are amazed that she always seem to have one more coin bought over from the crusades. One couple claim to have seen a demonic figure that visited her at night.

The mother is suspected of witchcraft and accused of turning base metal into gold.

Pretty soon the Sheriff of Nottingham thinks that Robin Hood will come to save her. So he persuades a villager to poison some cattle and blame it on the mother.

By this time it should be clear that outlaws should not be visiting their families. It only leads to trouble.

At least the writers, one of them is credited to Ring Lardner Jr captures the hysteria. The villagers should had figured out that the mother's outlaw son was the one bringing the coins.

There is a humorous side story. A wealthy lady thinks that it is a sheer waste to burn a woman for turning metal into gold. She should be used to make more gold.
