The Sheriff is unhappy with the quality of his boots. On a visit to one of the villages he tries on some "common" boots made by the villagers and finds them quite comfortable. His regular boot maker from Nottingham is angry to loose the Sheriff's trade and sends thugs to harass the villagers. Maid Marion complains to the Sheriff for the village is on her land. The Sheriff is supportive of the villagers and orders the Nottingham boot makers to desist. But, when he learns from his boot maker that leather for his boots is of deerskin tanned by Robin Hood's band, he changes course and allows the bullying to continue. Robin Hood is asked for help and responds by teaching the villagers, ladies included, how to defend themselves. When the bully's return to trash the village, the ladies of the town drive them away and peace is restored. Written by patienttype

The Original Mission Impossible

Robin and Will Scarlet appear in drag, which alone makes this episode worth watching.

The Sheriff (hiss, boo) is going to hang a man loyal to King Richard. To prevent Robin Hood from saving him, he declares that only women will be allowed to enter or leave the city. I guess he thinks that Robin is too macho to put on woman's clothes.

There are four or five delightfully comic scenes from this classic gag scenario. Still, there is also a fair share of suspense when Robin himself gets tricked.

This episode was written and directed by Ralph Smart. Smart produced and directed many Buccaneer episodes, a sister series to Robin Hood. He also produced "Danger Man" AKA "Secret Agent Man" the best Secret Agent series ever.

Simone Lovell play Joan, a saucy wench, who helps Robin with his plan. I've seen her briefly in some other episodes and was impressed. Here she has more to do and plays her scenes wonderfully. It was nice to see another woman helping Robin, besides Maid Marian for a change. I have only seen the first 20 episodes and she has been in about four. She's in 16 episodes altogether, so I'm looking forward to the next 12 with her.
