Beware false friends
pensman5 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Anytime Bowie runs across his "friend" Cephas K. Ham (Chuck Connors), Bowie will be in trouble. This time is no different. Bowie is going to be taken to see a fabled Apache silver mine by his blood brother Chief Xolic; but a young ambitious Indian objects: Three Hands. Bowie offers to be taken to the mine but blindfolded so he won't know the location. What he doesn't know is that Cephas is following. Once in the mine, Bowie is astonished at the wealth before him; and for a moment he weakens letting greed seep into him. But when Xolic offers Bowie a ingot to take, Bowie refuses arguing against temptation. As they are leaving, Three Hands discovers Cephas and accuses Bowie of speaking with a false face. A fight ensues and while Bowie and Cephas escape, Xolic is wounded and dies. As Bowie and Cephas recover in a local bar, Cephas argues he and Bowie should split the mine between them as Cephas knows the arroyo that hides the mine, and Bowie know where the hidden entrance is. Bowie says no deal as he promised Xolic not to reveal the location. Cephas says it's just a promise to an Indian and means nothing. Bowie is disgusted and leaves Cephas wondering if he should have left him to the Apaches.
