Storyline

To cap off Wednesday's upcoming birthday, Gomez "Tennessee" Addams has written a play - Claude & Mable (which comes out quite exactly like Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet). To make sure his play is a big success, Gomez hires acclaimed Broadway director Eric Von Bissell to direct it. Von Bissel's career has been on the skids of late, so Gomez' money is quite appealing even though the rest of the project isn't; still, Von Bissell's pride and artistic reputation are threatened when he learns that Cousin Itt, with his gibber talk, will play the lead. Morticia takes Itt aside to work on lowering and slowing his voice for the average ear, but when she succeeds she finds Itt's personality has changed along with his voice. Now he's a theatrical snob of the worst sort - too good for the lead in Wednesday's birthday play. Written by statmanjeff

Trivia

The title is based on the Lerner and Loewe movie My Fair Lady (1964). The original Broadway production of "My Fair Lady" opened at the Mark Hellinger Theater in New York on March 15, 1956, and ran for 2717 performances, which was, at the time, the longest run a Broadway show had ever had. Goofs

When Lurch tells Gomez and Morticia that Cousin Itt and Uncle Fester are both gone, he is not looking directly at them. It then cuts to a different angle, and he is facing them. See more »

Quotes

Morticia Frump Addams: Gomez, Mr. Von Bissel may have a point. I do think Itt's voice is a bit too fast for the average listener.
Gomez Addams: We never noticed that.
Morticia Frump Addams: Yes, I noticed it in that last scene we did. Perhaps we'd best take him down to the playroom and work on his voice, bring out that fine timber.
Gomez Addams: Great idea, but we'll have to watch out for splinters.

Cousin Itt develops a "star complex."
20 February 2006 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

In this episode the entire regular cast prepares to perform a play. After Gomez bribes the producer with $60,000 he agrees to do the play, casting cousin Itt in the star role. When cousin Itt is heard to speak only gibberish, the producer wants to back out, but decides to stay because of the bribe. Gomez and Morticia then try to teach cousin Itt to talk normally. This episode is an obvious parody of the movie "My Fair Lady." Much like in the movie Gomez and Morticia gradually get Cousin Itt to speak, albeit in a deep sophisticated voice. Cousin Itt then begins to wear sunglasses and take on the airs of a self-centered actor. He repeatedly recites lines from the movie "My Fair Lady", and Shakespeare. The entire episode is an amusing parody of the movie. It may be the only episode in which cousin Itt speaks in an understandable voice. Naturally in the end, he returns to speaking his normal gibberish.
