Police Sgt. Ed Bird, a friend of Stuart's with a somewhat intense personality, asks him for help after being handed a thirty day suspension for a bar brawl, the fight stemming from needing to get some aggression out after a disagreement with his nightclub chorus girl girlfriend, Jill Franklyn. Not wanting to lose his own momentum on a murder case, Ed asks Stuart to interview a potential eyewitness, Mrs. Cranston. Ed is hoping what Mrs. Cranston will tell him and Stuart will be the final nail in the coffin for proving the murder being committed by gangster, Vic Gurney, who knows that Ed is after him. The disagreement that Ed and Jill had was about Vic, who Jill knows from her dealings at the club. But in the course of the investigation, Ed and Stuart learn that Jill's association with Vic is more than just in passing at the club. Further circumstantial evidence points to Jill perhaps being involved with Vic in the murder. In trying to discover what Vic and Jill's tie is, Ed and Stuart may have some difficulty as Jill disappears without a trace, perhaps at Vic's hands. Still in love with her despite not really knowing much about her or her background, Ed is determined to find Jill to discover the truth.
