A horror
keysam-0261026 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Bill's mother arrives. She's a horror. (She's Liz Smith, so brilliantly done but a ghastly character). Why Bill & Ben don't tell her off for her smoking in their house, nicking their bedroom, interfering &c., I don't know. What's she going to do to them? Anyway, they seem to want to just take it. At least for now...

The biker turns up again and this time he & Bill speak face to face, but she still doesn't get to know his name.

Ben's karaoke and its effect on the kids - well, Jenny - is brilliant, as is the game Rona & Bill play in the bakery where the next male customer will be their date for the night & the experience will be described by whatever it is they buy (sticky bun!)

It's another good episode, but they should tell Bette to not be such a bad guest!

You know it's a winner when Liz Smith appears.

This show always had wonderful characters, that was evident after episode one, first of all we get Auntie Tina, now we get Bill's mum Bette. The terrible, chain smoking misery, who is never satisfied by anything.

I think Liz Smith's addition showed how confident they were that the show would be a smash, and they weren't wrong, this is a smashing episode, and Smith is terrific in her delivery. The mother and daughter scenes are always so funny between Smith and Lang.

Pure family comedy joy. No wonder it used to get huge audiences. 8/10
