Guess who's coming back...
11 February 2009 | by (Italy) – See all my reviews

By adhering to the show's race-against-the-clock formula 90% of the time, the seventh hour of Day 4 manages to be riveting despite the return of the soapy subplot involving Driscoll's daughter (for Pete's sake, it's 24, not The Bold and the Beautiful, okay?).

The tense mood is guaranteed by two separate plot strands: firstly, Jack takes Audrey with him right in the middle of the action because she can identify a suspect, but it just so happens the terrorists know about it as well (meaning CTU is compromised once again) and start pursuing them; secondly, now that the real threat has been exposed, Edgar has to make sure several nuclear meltdowns can be avoided. Oh, and Dina Araz tries to keep her son safe from her husband since the kid's officially been targeted.

The main news of the episode is we get to see the face of the season's major villain, Habib Marwan - he's played by Arnold Vosloo, aka Imhotep from the Mummy franchise, and the first impression is he doesn't disappoint. On a more negative side, the plot is partially weakened by the aforementioned Driscoll subplot, and there's no satisfactory explanation for why Lana Parilla's credit is suddenly upgraded from guest star to regular cast member. She's not bad or anything, it just doesn't make that much sense.

Thankfully, the episode remains impressively good despite these occasional flaws, and it's almost entirely a consequence of a familiar, albeit uncredited, face returning to the show. Not that it's too hard to guess who it is: how many people would Jack describe as "the only person I can trust right now"?
