The Liberator crew learn from Orac that the planets Teal and Vandor are at war and are intrigued further when they also learn that two professional warriors chosen by both Teal and Vandor as their champions engage each in a deathmatch which a random planet is chosen as their battleground. If the champion of Teal or Vandor loses, the losing side is forced to surrender their territory. The Liberator crew decides to go to Teal to observe the deathmatch as spectators and they learn Tarrant's brother Deeta is Teal's champion and that he is to participate in a deathmatch against Vandor's champion Vinni and Servalan has been appointed as the neutral arbiter and this causes Avon to become suspicious. In the deathmatch, Deeta fails and is killed by Vinni and Vandor wins. However, Orac discovers that Vinni is not human and is a cyborg and Avon and the Liberator crew work out Servalan's scheme and that Vinni will undergo a medical examination and that if it is discovered Vinni is a cyborg it will trigger open war between Teal and Vandor. After Dayna sabotages Vinni's medical examination and prevents the representatives of Teal and Vandor from discovering that Vinni is a cyborg, Tarrant decides to take on Vinni in another deathmatch and sets out to avenge Deeta and stop Servalan's scheme to set off open war between Teal and Vandor.
