And What a Night it Was
joltjohn9 November 2002
This Bee Gees' concert is an excellent showcase of all their hits as well songs made into hits by other performers. The songs are: "Massachusetts" and "I Started a Joke" , "Words", "To Love Somebody", and "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart", "Night Fever", "You Should be Dancing", "Stayin' Alive", and "Grease", "Alone", "Still Waters", "Closer than Close", "I Gotta get a message to You", "Islands in the Stream", "One", "Lonely Days", "Morning of My Life", "New York Mining Disaster 1941", Too Much Heaven", "I can't see nobody", "Run To Me" "And the Sun Will Shine", "Nights On Broadway", "Heartbreaker", "guilty", "tragedy", "Jive Talking", and "how deep is your Love". Included is a very moving tribute/duet to/with brother Andy done to the song "Our Love", and other artists are recognized--Frankie Valli, Olivia Newton-John, John Travolta. Celine Dion is the special guest who does a duet on the song "immortality".

Their voices and harmonies are still exquisite; Robin, with that hauntingly beautiful sound, and Barry's voice, what can you say, is wonderful while Maurice seems to be the personality(good natured and funny) who deftly handles all the accompanying instruments. All three have given us FOUR decades of terrific music and have condensed it into ONE night's performance showcasing their unmistakable, and recognizable as ever Bee Gees' "sound". this rates 9/10.

Staying Power
raymondmens22 May 2006
The Bee Gees have been all over the place. They've been around since the early '60s, and in this concert (taped in 1997) they remain as powerful as ever. Hitting the high notes like no other, the Brothers Gibb show they have not lost their touch.

Having written smash hits in the '60s, '70s, '80s and '90s, it's no wonder the Brothers Gibb could not perform every single one of them. They pack almost 30 of their songs from those four consecutive decades in a sensational show. Performing songs from the early days like Massachusetts, To Love Somebody, Gotta Get A Message To You, and I Started A Joke. To their latest songs from the 'Still Waters' album from '97, like Closer Than Close, Still Waters and Alone. The brothers did not forget the disco craze, as they also performed Stayin' Alive, You Should Be Dancing, Tragedy, Night Fever and More Than A Woman.

The Gibb brothers also did a great job performing hit songs they wrote and produced for other artist. Like Islands In The Stream (originally Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers), Our Love - Don't Throw It All Away (originally recorded by their brother Andy Gibb), Guilty (Barbra Streisand) and Grease (Frankie Vallie). They are even joined by Celine Dion to perform Immortallity, a song the brothers wrote for Celine.

This concert really shows the unique gift these three brothers share. Not only their creativity, but also their talent to perform their songs live, almost perfectly.

How Deep Is Your Love, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, Nights on Broadway, Jive Talking', Morning Of My Life, Lonely Days, One, and much more songs are part of the Gibb collection also taped on this show.

It must have been a lifetime experience that one night only at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Thanks to this DVD, in one way we can all be a part of it.

They Stayed Alive

Bravo! To the Bee Gees for this performance. I am 15 years old and LOVE the Brothers Gibb. I sometimes get made fun of at school for liking them, but I don't care. Those other kids don't know what they are missing. Their harmony is spectacular. Barry strains somewhat to hit those old high notes. But who can really blame him. Besides that, he was going through a secret back pain injury that was almost unbearable and nearly left him paralyzed. Anyone who knows singing knows you have to stand up very straight to hit those high notes. Other than that he is flawless. Robin's voice is, as usual, amazing. His voice is creamy smooth in "I Started A Joke". Maurice is robbed of many shots in this concert, which is very sad because it was one of the last ones he did. His vocals are excellent as well. If you listen close, you can hear him sing some pretty high notes. This is a must see, must own, concert of anyone who loves, likes, or has even thought about liking the Bee Gees. It holds many sentimental values because in 2001, youngest brother Maurice, died. The two remaining Bee Gees decided to stop the group. It deserves more then 10 stars. So watch it! Or else!

Bee Gees- One Night Only (1997)
info-143991 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Introduction:

When I first began amassing my DVD collection, The Bee Gees- One Night Only was one of the first ones I noticed. Having a few fond Bee Gees memories from my younger days was not enough to overcome my indifference to give this release a chance. I was one of many who gravitated to hard rock and heavy metal music and left the widespread disco scene behind. It was the urge to hear something different after a two week drought from DVD purchasing that ultimately influenced my decision to pick up a copy. Since that time, this DVD has been played more often than any other in my collection due to repeat requests from family and friends. The overall quality is hard to beat.

Track Listing:

You Should Be Dancing, Alone, Massachusetts, To Love Somebody, I've Gotta Get A Message To You, Words, Closer Than Close, Islands In The Stream, One, Our Love (Don't Throw It All Away) (featuring Andy Gibb), Night Fever, More Than A Woman, Still Waters, Lonely Days, Morning Of My Life, New York Mining Disaster 1941, Too Much Heaven, I Can't See Nobody, Run To Me, And The Sun Will Shine, Nights On Broadway, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, Heartbreaker, Guilty, Immortality (featuring Celine Dion), Tragedy, I Started A Joke, Grease, Jive Talking', How Deep Is Your Love, Stayin' Alive, You Should Be Dancing

Performance: 10/ 10

The Gibb brothers (Barry, Maurice and Robin) put on an excellent show at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, their first U.S. concert in almost ten years. The Bee Gees perform most of their biggest hits as well as a good selection of gold and platinum music they (or Barry) wrote for other popular musicians. Some of their excellent renditions include 'Islands In the Stream' (Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton), Heartbreaker (Dionne Warwick) and Guilty (Barbra Streisand). The show opens with a shortened version of 'You Should Be Dancing' and ends with the full song version. In all, the Bee Gees perform 30 different hits, with some shortened versions during their acoustic medley and a combined version of 'Night Fever/ More Than A Woman'. The acoustic medley features the 3 brothers sharing a single microphone with Barry accompanying on acoustic guitar. This is one of the highlights of the concert, showcasing much of their highly acclaimed harmonizing as well as friendly banter and audience interaction. I found nothing to criticize with the brothers' voices, although Barry's falsetto isn't quite what it once was, but this is nitpicking. His baritone has the same power as in his younger days and Robin's voice is as distinctive and emotional as ever. Maurice's friendly and playful personality shines through and his harmonizing abilities are second to none. He sings lead on one song, 'Closer Than Close'. I appreciate Maurice's talent more than ever since his untimely death in 2003. Another highlight is the brothers' tribute to Andy Gibb, with sequential film clips of Andy's life appearing on a huge screen and the Bee Gees' back-up to Andy's recorded voice. Following their acoustic medley, the Bee Gees are joined instate by Celine Dion. This normally serves as my bathroom break, as I've never been a big fan of hers. Still, this is a definite highlight for my female viewers and I???m not saying I don???t think she has a good voice. I simply consider her to be over-rated and would much rather hear Karen Carpenter, Ella Fitzgerald, Diana Krall or even Whitney Houston. To each his own I guess, I find many soprano voices a little annoying. The 'fake orgasm' (as I jokingly refer to it- my girlfriend hates me for it!) she displays at the end of the song cracks me up every time! They follow up this collaboration with some of their biggest hits including an outstanding vocal performance by Robin on 'I Started A Joke' and the Bee Gees accompanying Frankie Valli's recorded voice on 'Grease'. They close the set with the mega-hit 'Stayin Alive' and exit the stage, to return and introduce the band and production members. A high energy performance of 'You Should Be Dancing' follows to close the show. While other bands may have a more elaborate stage show, I found nothing to criticize and had no reservations to giving a perfect score. The Gibb brothers went all out to impress and it worked.

Audio Quality: 9/ 10

I honestly found nothing to complain about on this DVD. The instruments and vocals are clear and very well mixed. For my tastes, I would have preferred a little more bottom end but the sound engineer did a fantastic job. The DTS sound mix is far better than the Dolby 5.1 version, with a more realistic conveyance of concert hall acoustics and deeper bass.

Video Quality: 9/ 10

The video quality for this entire DVD is quite remarkable. The lighting is superb and the stage area remains well focused and crisp throughout the concert. Panning and camera cuts are done tastefully and are well timed. Many modern video mixers could learn a lot from studying this DVD. I find it most annoying to view a new camera angle every few seconds or being forced to see close-ups of things that aren't even relevant to the show. A first- rate video presentation was achieved for this DVD.

Extras/ Final Thoughts:

No extras appear on the disc, but that's okay. You get one hour and fifty minutes of a classic performance by three Rock and Roll Hall of Famers and it's well worth the money. Another version of this DVD has 'This Is Where I Came In: The Official Story of the Bee Gees' included and I highly recommend this release if you care to watch some entertaining footage and interviews covering the Bee Gees' lives and careers.

Enjoy! Curtis

If You Like The BeeGees..you should definitely watch this!
koolnut11 January 2007
We own a BeeGees Concert video and i can tell you, that it one of the best performances that the BeeGees have done together. It's just an amazing piece of musical footage and the vocals are well, legendary! I'm thirteen and i still like going back to those times. I mean really..you can't find high voices like that anymore when it comes to modern music. The songs are great and there are also special appearances of celebrities at the concert, people like Celine Dion as well as Olivia Newton-John from the musical "Grease".

So if you like BeeGees, you should definitely get this or it would be a "tradgedy" not to do so.

Oh, those Brothers Gibb!
dinycat7 November 1999
This Bee Gees' concert will surely tug at Baby Boomers' hearts--because it brings back fond memories of youth, while simultaneously reaffirming fears of aging. These guys are middle-aged! Barry Gibb, one-time hunk, has thinning hair and wrinkles, for heaven's sake. THEY ALL HAVE THINNING HAIR AND WRINKLES. Glasses are nothing new to them, either.

But none of that matters. Nothing's changed EXCEPT that physical nonsense. Their voices and harmonies are still exquisite; Robin, with that hauntingly beautiful sound, and Barry's voice--as individual, unmistakable, and recognizable as ever as the Bee Gees' "sound".

Time stands still when they sing the old songs, like "Massachusetts" and "I Started a Joke" (Robin's two masterpieces), "Words", "To Love Somebody", and "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart".

The "Helium Years" (with Barry's falsetto) are well represented, too, with "Night Fever", "You Should be Dancing", "Stayin' Alive", and "Grease".

A few of their newest songs (and some of their best) are featured--"Alone", "Still Waters", and Maurice's wonderfully personal, "Closer than Close". Yes, there appears to be no end in sight, thankfully.

Included is a very moving tribute to brother Andy, and other artists are recognized--Frankie Valli, Olivia Newton-John, John Travolta. Celine Dion is the special guest.

Barry is the ultimate performer who works hard to deliver (and does), while Robin is quiet and enigmatic. Maurice seems to be the personality--good-natured and funny--who also deftly handles all the accompanying instruments.

Whatever. These THREE have given us FOUR decades of terrific music and have condensed it into ONE night's performance. And it's a FIVE star effort.

A beautiful musical memory of the three brothers
AnnaWendtII20 April 2018
I watch this from time to time when I want to remember The Bee Gees as they were- three brothers who made beautiful harmonies together. Many of their songs are poignant yet optimistic and the lyrics are as relevant as the melodies!

Quite a night
gcanfield-297275 July 2020
While watching this the first time, I noticed that Robin, who had sported many versions of long hair, suddenly had almost no hair at all. What does this have to do with the concert? Not much. Things like that just make me curious. The concert is great, even though Barry's falsetto was starting to falter a little, at this point. It was great that Night Fever and More Than a Woman (my favorite Bee Gees song) were included. However, they should have done the full version of each, instead of combining them into one. Celine Dion's appearance is a highlight, as well as the tribute to Andy Gibb. A few good songs were left out, but a great concert, overall.

Brilliant

This concert is brilliant in every way, visual, audio and the overall concert. New day criticises this production, but what he really means, is that they didn't play his choice.

The Bee Gees disgrace themselves!
OrdinaryDay24 June 2003
One night only - Obviously, there is no way this concert could have been streched out any longer! First things first - They don't even sing any of their good songs, such as 'You Win Again' and 'I could not love you more'! I kept waiting for them to do you win again, and of course, they just did those outdated dance numbers that no one cares about anymore! The tribute to Andy was so tacky it made me cringe - Couldn't they have at least tried to pay tribute to their extremely talented younger sibling?!?! The Bee Gees perform all the songs with no emotion, and it is never a good sign when they remain motionless during 'You should be dancing'! Do I even need to point out that everyone in the audience looked over 50? If you really want the bee gees, buy their latest greatest hits album and forget this concert, whatever you do!
