Weta Digital Takes Third ‘Planet of the Apes’ VFX to a New Level

Weta Digital Takes Third ‘Planet of the Apes’ VFX to a New Level
The 2011 “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” offered visual-effects breakthroughs, and the filmmakers raised the bar even higher in the 2014 sequel. The finale in the trilogy, 2017’s “War for the Planet of the Apes,” is the most ambitious and most effective yet, thanks to director Matt Reeves, who gives a lot of credit to Weta Digital: “These guys make the impossible happen.”

War for the Planet of the Apes” is Oscar-nominated for its VFX work and on Feb. 13 led the Visual Effects Society Awards, with four trophies.

Reeves talked with Weta’s Joe Letteri and Dan Lemmon about “War” in a Q&A session at the Directors Guild in Hollywood Feb. 12. The film’s innovations include a spectacular avalanche, the enhancement of the many real locations (e.g., adding a key waterfall), an explosive helicopter battle, details like wet and/or snowy fur, and the creation of new characters like Bad Ape.

‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ Deserves to Win the VFX Oscar

‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ Deserves to Win the VFX Oscar
The time has come for the Academy to finally give the VFX Oscar to “War for the Planet of the Apes.” Twice denied for “Rise” and “Dawn,” Weta Digital’s remarkable work on Caesar (Andy Serkis) culminated with a Shakespearean finale. It’s undeniably the best of the field. And coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the original “Planet of the Apes” would make it even sweeter. The Visual Effects Society obviously got the importance of the work, honoring the entire Caesar trilogy, now we’ll see if the Academy makes amends with “War.”

However, “Apes” has been denied before (with the acting branch, in particular, having a bias against Serkis and performance capture) and there is other noteworthy character animation to choose from, including the stunning CG Rachael from “Blade Runner 2049,” the creepy Snoke (Serkis) from “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” Ego and the de-aged Kurt Russell from

Ves Awards 2018: ‘War for the Planet of the Apes,’ ‘Coco’ Win Top VFX Prizes
War for the Planet of the Apes” from Weta Digital could well be on its way to the elusive VFX Oscar after winning four Ves trophies Tuesday night at the Beverly Hilton (including the top feature prize). Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk” won for supporting VFX, Pixar’s “Coco” earned four awards (including VFX for animation), and “Game of Thrones” took home five awards (including VFX for TV).

The “Apes” finale, directed by Matt Reeves, benefited from a Shakespearean performance from Andy Serkis as Caesar, with Weta working its wizardry in much harsher conditions for the performance-captured animation. Not surprisingly, “Apes” additionally won for Caesar, the effects simulations for the thrilling avalanche, and compositing. However, although both “Rise” and “Dawn” captured Ves prizes, neither won the Oscar, so “War” is not a certainty in its race with “Blade Runner 2049.”

Speaking of which, Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner” sequel won two

Best Visual Effects Oscar predictions: A vote for ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ would honor the whole trilogy

Best Visual Effects Oscar predictions: A vote for ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ would honor the whole trilogy
War for the Planet of the Apes” is nominated at the Oscars for Best Visual Effects, following nominations in the same category for 2011’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” and 2014’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.” Neither “Rise” nor “Dawn” won Visual Effects in their respective years, despite showcasing some of the most realistic effects in film today. “War” is Oscar voters’ final shot at rewarding the film franchise’s groundbreaking visual effects, but much like in previous years, it could be an uphill battle.

War” is the latest nomination in the “Planet of the Apes” film series for VFX supervisors Joe Letteri, Daniel Barrett and Dan Lemmon, earning nominations for the first two films as well, with Joel Whist earning his first nom alongside them. Letteri is the director of the innovative VFX company Weta Digital, which has won six Oscars, for all three “Lord of the Rings” films,

Best Visual Effects predictions: ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ will win damn dirty Oscar for third ‘Apes’ reboot
After failing to win the Best Visual Effects Oscar for “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” (2011) and “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” (2014), it looks like the third time will be the charm for 20th Century Fox’s “Apes” reboot. According to Gold Derby’s official Oscar predictions, “War for the Planet of the Apes” is in the lead with 8/11 odds to win that damn dirty Oscar on March 4. It faces off against “Blade Runner 2049,” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” “Kong: Skull Island” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” at the 2018 Oscars.

As awards watchers know, “Hugo” surprised by beating “Rise” in the visual effects race back in 2011, while “Dawn” lost to “Interstellar” in 2014. Director Matt Reeves‘ “War,” which chronicles the battle for Earth between the apes and the humans, is the third reboot of the original “Planet of the Apes” series of films from the 1960s and 1970s.

‘Blade Runner 2049’: Could China and Japan Openings Defuse a Box-Office Bomb?
Eighteen days into its run, Dennis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049” has a domestic gross of $75 million, and a worldwide total of around $200 million. As widely chronicled, that is disappointing for the highly touted and well-reviewed sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1983 cult classic, which has in excess of $250 million in production, marketing, and distribution costs. That leaves the film a long way from any hope of breakeven.

Despite hopes for a last-minute rescue from adult domestic audiences, two straight weekend drops of over 50 percent at home means a domestic total around $90 million-$95 million, with the low end more likely. Most of the world opened concurrently with North America — except China and Japan, where it opens October 27.

What propels any hopes for these markets? In China, it could be the very strong performance for another high-end science-fiction film. “War for the Planet of the Apes” grossed $112 million there, about 75 percent of its domestic take.
