The content of this page was created directly by users and has not been screened or verified by IMDb staff.
Since the beliefs that parents want to instill in their children can vary greatly, we ask that, instead of adding your personal opinions about what is right or wrong in a film, you use this feature to help parents make informed viewing decisions by describing the facts of relevant scenes in the title for each one of the different categories: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes.

Sex & Nudity

4/10

The Na'vi people are aliens, but they are humanoid creatures. They dress in a tribal way, and we see their backsides (not fully covered by their tails) quite a bit. The men wear only loincloths, and the women wear loincloths and ornamental, stringy necklaces as bras. Their breasts are partially seen through these necklaces and from the sides at several points during the movie.

A brief sex scene between Jake and Neytiri shows the two kissing and beginning to passionately caress each other. Jake then lifts Neytiri onto him, and she begins to moan as they embrace passionately. There is no nudity, but they wake together the next morning, and Neytiri explains they are "mated for life." In the extended edition, this scene includes the two touching their tails together, implying they can "feel" each other (as explained earlier in the film).

Both Jake and Dr. Augustine are stripped naked (in human form) and wrapped in vines for a special Na'vi ritual. Their backsides are seen partially, but critical nudity is hidden.

A few sexual jokes and lines are tossed about, including a masturbation quip from Dr. Augustine ("don't play with that, you'll go blind" when she sees an Avatar playing with its tail).

Violence & Gore

6/10

Most of the violence is relatively bloodless.

Jake's first adventure involves a chase with a Thanator, a wolf/lion like beast. Jake fires machine gun bullets at the beast, and barely escapes death by the monster's grabbing claws. Late at night, a group of vicious small Viperwolves stalk, surround, and try to maul Jake. He fights a few off, slashing at them with a knife, but Neytiri comes in and kills one with an arrow, while hitting the other ones with her bow. She is also tackled by a wolf during this fight.

The Na'vi hometree is destroyed by Quatrich and his military ships. He throws in gas canisters to chase the people out, and then fires missiles at the base, which cause the tree to topple down on top of many.

A long, epic battle takes place between the humans and Na'vi. Military crafts crash, explode, and attack violently. Dragon like creatures are shot and fall to their deaths, along with several Na'vi (at close range too). A dragon grabs a soldier in its mouth an hurls him out of a cockpit, arrows impale several soldiers, and one receives two arrows straight to the chest at close range. Quatrich faces off with Neytiri as she rides a Thanator, and she is pinned beneath it when the general violently stabs the beast several times in the gut. He also faces off in a melee format with Jake.

Quatrich has Jake, Dr. Augustine, and Norm arrested, and the three punch and kick wildly to fight back. When they try to escape, Dr. Augustine is shot, and we see her bloody wound briefly. She later dies from the wound

[Extended Edition: We see a couple in an obviously abusive relationship at a bar on Earth, with the man beating the woman. Jake move over to stop the man and begins violently beating him on the ground while she begs for him to stop. Jake is then thrown out of the bar.

Jake kills Tsu'tey as part of a succession ritual. Tsu'tey is dying already from bloody bullet holes, and Jake leans over him and stabs him.

We see many dead bodies and destroyed machines in the aftermath of an attack made by members of the tribe.]

Profanity

6/10

11 scatological terms, 5 anatomical terms, 11 mild obscenities, 7 religious profanities, 6 religious exclamations, name calling ("moron").

Grace screams "you mother-"

[Extended Edition: Additional uses of a**, b**ch and t*ts.]

8/10

A woman has a drink that's presumably alcoholic.

Beer and tequila are mentioned a couple of times.

A woman smokes several times, and at one point asks for a cigarette with urgency.

[Extended Edition: an early scene take place in a bar on Earth, with Jake apparently participating in a drinking contest.

Jake pulls a cigarette out of Grace's mouth and tells her not to smoke.]

7/10

Some intense violence.

Strong emotional intensity at some points.

Very strong directorial dramatisation to the point of manipulativeness throughout the movie. (At some points people could be heard crying in the theater.)

Scenes of chases with animals might be intense to some people.

The 3D version is much more intense and realistic.
