Manhunt: Unabomber Review: Discovery's New Anthology Series Is Less Explosive Than Analytical

15 hours ago | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

How much you enjoy Manhunt: Unabomber will depend almost entirely on one thing: how gripping you find watching someone else solve a puzzle.

In the first three hours of Discovery’s new anthology series (premiering Tuesday, Aug. 1, at 9/8c), there are some gruesome reenactments of Ted Kaczynski’s crimes, insurance that we never lose sight of what’s at stake. And the drama manages to wring suspense out of a bunch of G-men standing around a phone and listening, fearful of an explosion, as planes are cleared for takeoff. But mostly, it’s a whole lot of rookie profiler “Fitz »

What Sets Christopher Nolan Apart From Other Blockbuster Directors

23 July 2017 6:30 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

With the release of Dunkirk, Eric Bay-Andersen explores the aspects of Christopher Nolan’s films that set him apart from his contemporaries…

Over the past twenty years, Christopher Nolan has amassed a body of work so impressive that a new film by him is now an event in the cinematic calendar. But it’s not just the great performances or the jaw-dropping set pieces in his films that have won him such acclaim and respect in the industry – it’s his philosophy when it comes to making and marketing movies. In this article, I will suggest some of the reasons why I believe Christopher Nolan is a cut above most other blockbuster directors…

When I heard that Rian Johnson (writer/director of the brilliant Brick and Looper) had signed up to direct a Star Wars film I was very annoyed, because I knew it would be at least five years »

Playback: Luc Besson on ‘Valerian’ and Finding Inspiration Outside of Movies

20 July 2017 8:48 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Welcome to “Playback,” a Variety podcast bringing you exclusive conversations with the talents behind many of today’s hottest films.

Filmmaker Luc Besson grew up at sea, soaking up beautiful scenery, the child of scuba diving instructors. He eventually found his way to the comic series “Valerian and Laureline,” and a childhood dream was born.

For years he wanted to turn the eye-popping French tales into a feature film, but until he saw what James Cameron accomplished on “Avatar,” he felt it was impossible. Finally, that dream is a reality as “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” hits theaters this weekend. And it’s noteworthy that it’s a project with such deep roots in his childhood, because in many ways, his childhood influenced what you see up on the screen in the film.

Listen to this week’s episode of “Playback” below. New episodes air every Thursday.

Horror Highlights: The Gracefield Incident Q&A, Volumes Of Blood: Horror Stories, Famous Monsters Of Filmland at Comic-Con

17 July 2017 7:01 AM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

In today's Horror Highlights, we have a Q&A with The Gracefield Incident at Mathieu Ratthe, new stills from Volumes of Blood: Horror Stories, and details on Famous Monsters of Filmland's presence at this year's San Diego Comic-Con.

Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Mathieu. How and when did you first come up with the idea for The Gracefield Incident?

Mathieu Ratthe: First of all, thank you, Derek, for your interest in our film. I wanted to create a suspenseful story that scared the crap out of the audience, but also made them emotionally involved, which is really tough to do in this kind of movie, but I think we achieved it pretty well in our film.

The conceptual idea (or I liked to call it the “technique”) came after I realized how many days I was given to shoot our film with the budget that I had. »

Sigourney Weaver discusses James Cameron’s four Avatar sequels

16 July 2017 6:09 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

With James Cameron gearing up to go into production on his Avatar sequels, returning star Sigourney Weaver has been chatting to Entertainment Weekly about the hugely-ambitous project, which expanded during development from the initially planned two movies to four.

“There’s a very good reason why it turned out to be four sequels,” said Weaver. “Having read all four of them, I think they’re absolutely extraordinary and worth the wait. These films are very much about the peril of this beautiful planet, and [James Cameron] is continuing the same themes of greed and callousness of the corporations and plight of the indigenous people. At this point after a long and very satisfying career – I can’t believe it’s been forty years, but anyway – I’m very excited to be able to work on these four stories. I can really, really appreciate it.”

Avatar: Sigourney Weaver Defends The Existence Of Four Sequels

14 July 2017 11:00 AM, PDT | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

James Cameron is unquestionably the god of the box office. The man made two of the highest grossing films of all time with Avatar and the Titanic, and he’s made an undeniable impact on the industry. Despite all these accomplishments, he’s faced a whole lot of skepticism from filmgoers regarding the upcoming Avatar sequels.

Fairly soon after Avatar hit theaters, Cameron made his intentions known to do sequels, but many believed it to be two more to make a trilogy. That was a lot, but it was understandable. And then it was revealed there would be three sequels, and finally four. That would make for five Avatar films. Even for the highest grossing movie of all time, was it truly necessary to make four sequels back-to-back-to-back-to-back?

Sigourney Weaver Says “There’s a Very Good Reason” for Four ‘Avatar’ Sequels

14 July 2017 7:28 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Never bet against James Cameron. This much we know to be true. Whether it’s a Terminator sequel or a massively expensive epic called Titanic, Cameron consistently blows past naysayers to craft wildly popular films, and of course he’s the director behind the two highest grossing movies ever made. But it’s hard not to be skeptical about Cameron’s plan for making an additional four Avatar sequels. Not only are we nearly 10 years out from Cameron’s technologically groundbreaking original, but there aren’t exactly legions of Avatar fans the way that, say, Star Wars or Indiana … »

The Top 25 Box Office Blockbusters of the 21st Century

13 July 2017 7:45 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

No subjective “best” list here, this one is based on stats. As the 21st century turns 16, we’ve got the 25 biggest-grossing domestic blockbusters to date.

Check the stunning list below, which is unlike any previous period in movie business history. (We’re using adjusted totals to account for changing ticket prices. Box Office Mojo’s top 200 all-time adjusted list is here.) Here’s what we learned by doing the numbers:

The 21st Century Has Delivered Many of the Biggest Hits in History

25 of the 100 all-time biggest-grossing films have come from the first 16 years of this century. 1984 to 2000, the era that perfected the modern blockbuster and mass release of movies, brought 17. So the 21st century has been an era of major hits.

But oddly, the first current-century films on the all-time-grossers list places #11: “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” And “Avatar” is #14. (This is where adjusting becomes essential — unadjusted, the ten »
