For no particular reason I've been watching a great many Jim Enright features lately, and his work is entertaining, if decidedly lowbrow. Aping Mel Brooks certainly falls within a lowbrow's wheelhouse, so this over-extended skit is worth sampling.
A talented cast goes for broke in the humor department, led by Randy Spears as a descendant of Victor Frankenstein who heads to Europe and gets involved with the nutsy folks at the good doctor's castle. The fact that Ron Jeremy plays the legendary scientist is all you need to know.
The format reminded me of those wonderful '40s horror comedies populated by Red Skelton or Abbott & Costello, seen here through the eyes of Mel. The best porno versions were made by Enright for Wicked with Brad Armstrong and Steven St. Croix as a funny team, but this one plays okay too.
Shanna McCullough, of all people, is cast in the Cloris Leachman role of Frau Shtupper, a name I'm surprised Brooks didn't use in the first place. A very beautiful but comparatively obscure actress Isabella Camille gets top billing as "She Creature", basically the Bride of Frankenstein. Female lead goes to the wonderful star of the era Ava Vincent (I hope the fans remember her, fickle as they seem to be) and both Felecia Fox and Kylie Ireland are on hand for quality humping. The monster is a surprisingly tame role for Evan Stone, who should have been turned loose by Enright to do his thing. It would be equivalent to trying to harness the idiosyncratic talents of a Marty Feldman -not a wise move.
Jeremy is hammy as expected, and most of the comedy is delivered by Anthony Crane, in fact getting the Feldman role to play. Spears's extreme earnestness works in context, though he was better as a foil to Morgan & St. Croix in that earlier Enright classic "Haunted Nights".
Many of the running gags fall flat, but there is a momentum and relentlessness, typical of Enright's usual approach to filmmaking, that carries the day. Correct title on screen is spelled Wankerstein - a better pun thatn the misspelled box cover title Wankenstein.
