Panama City — Paddy Breathnach’s Cuban-set “Viva,” set in Havana’s drag nightclubs and selected as Ireland’s entry in this year’s foreign language film Oscar race, will open the fifth Panama International Film Festival (Iff Panama), which bows this Thursday, April 7.
Director Pituka Ortega Heilbron and artistic director Diana Sanchez consider this year’s edition the strongest to date, given the breadth of films slated, the range of guests, the record number of industry events and – key — the unprecedented number of films screening from Central America and the Caribbean.
“There are incredible films now coming out of this region,” says Heilbron. “We’re fortunate to have the perfect prerequisites for a coordinated and well-functioning festival, given the location of Panama City, its connectivity, infrastructure, hotels, access and support from the government, private sector and the local business sector.”

Mad Max: Fury Road has landed the most 2016 Empire Award nominations — ten (the same it got from the Oscars!) — of 2016 with Star Wars: The Force Awakens nipping at its heels with nine. The British magazine Empire presents the awards, which are voted on by readers and cinema fans around the world — both the nominations and the awards themselves. • Best Film
• Best Director (George Miller)
• Best Actor (Tom Hardy)
• Best Actress (Charlize Theron, who should teach a »

Just over 10 years ago, The Chronicles of Narnia franchise launched with the big screen adventure The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, which paved the way for 2008's The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and 2010's The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of The Dawn Treader. It's been over two years since we heard anything about the fourth installment, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair, with a December 2013 report that Life of Pi writer David Magee came aboard to write the script. Today we have a new update from producer Mark Gordon, who reveals that The Silver Chair will reboot the franchise entirely. Here's what he had to say, when asked if any characters from the first three movies would be involved.
"We're hoping to be able to make the movie very shortly. We're very excited about it. No, it's all going to be a brand new franchise. »
