I would be interested to know whether the quote 'Our lives dismay us.....we have dreams of leaving' originated with David Hare, or whether he was quoting from someone else's work. I have not been able to find it anywhere else. I find it a very haunting phrase, and I had an idea it might have been Yeats--but it seems not, or I would have been able to locate it. I remember seeing this play on television many years ago--I can't remember much about the play itself now, except that it had a bittersweet tone that the quote perfectly expresses. Great performance by a young Bill Nighy, and Kate Nelligan, of course, who featured a lot on British television at the time. Did she also play the mother in the film 'Prince of Tides' a few years later?
