Mixed feelings towards this tenth Detective Conan movie.
2 July 2010 | by (Norway) – See all my reviews

This movie, out of the ones I've seen had by far the most intriguing and suspenseful beginning, the stuff before the opening credits is really something, and I thought "great, Kogoro and Conan/Shinichi get to work together on a case". Not quite, after the fantastic opening it gradually lost it's way for me and I became less and less interested. The whole "Conan and Kogoro working together" concept is thrown out the window fairly early on, then Kaitou Kid appears, and I thought "No, not this guy". I'm not a big fan of the character, but I didn't want him there more in terms of "he does not need to be there and make things even more complicated". There are too many characters here. But in the end, his appearance helps wrap things up faster. Hattori and this other guy shows up and multiple characters pop up and stuff actually gets real confusing, until the ending of course where they explain everything. There's a great action scene in a building with motorcycles chasing the heroes. And there are some cute, funny moments among it all but...

I found certain aspects to be a bit troubling. Siskel and Ebert would always say that showing children in peril is the absolute cheapest way to gain an audiences attention and sympathy. Well, I think Gene Siskel in particular would've had a heart attack had he been alive to see this movie. The villain has given the children bracelets that'll explode if they try to leave the theme park, they are oblivious to this, so I didn't really mind this, and it's an effective way to make me hate the villain and create suspense, however...there's a moment late in the film where a random thief grabs a hostage and threatens to kill her with a huge hunting knife. Of course that first hostage had to be the sweetest, most adorable character on the show and in these movies, Ayumi, so the thief has her in one hand and this Crocodile Dundee knife in the other. This bothered me, but to be fair it didn't last very long, and the whole situation, to my big surprise ends rather humorous, yeah hard to believe but...yeah.

What bothered me even more was the smugness of the characters who try to solve the case, hey, don't mind the children and loved ones who are about to be blown to pieces, take your time and act cool in front of the others. The three detective characters display smug smiles way too often here, though of course they come through and save the day. I don't know, this movie just felt darker than the few others I have seen, there's more blood, a really creepy, sinister villain who is willing to kill a whole bunch of children if he doesn't get what he wants and there's less lighthearted comedy. But hey, it's still a pretty decent film.
