10 Movie Events That Shaped the Decade (For Movie Fans)

We’ve come to the end of 2009, so we thought we’d weigh in with a look back at the first 10 years of the 21st century in the movie world and discuss the various different “events” which shaped the decade. Obviously we can’t cover absolutely everything, but sticking true to our core movie genres on the site, we’re just going to concentrate on the comic-book, sci-fi, action (and so forth) types of movies and take a look at what films had the maximum impact over this decade.
It’s amazing to think that it’s been 10 years since movies like The Matrix, American Beauty and Fight Club (to name but a few) came out in 1999 (check out our 1999 decade highlight, if you haven’t already). A Lot of movies – somewhere in the vicinity of 5,000-6,000 – have been released since then. We’ve had the good, the bad and

Eli Roth's Giant Monster Movie Inches Closer to Reality

His role as the bat-totting, Nazi-hating, Bearjew in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds aside, Eli Roth is best known for pretty much one thing: Making bloody, controversial, R-rated horror movies. Things have been quite on Roth's directorial front, however, since 2007's Hostel: Part II failed to top the box office the same way his first journey to the seedy underground world of torture clubs. His initial follow-up project was supposed to be a film adaptation of Stephen King's sci-fi/horror hybrid novel Cell, but his involvement faded as the project transitioned from the big screen to the small screen.
Now, however, it looks like Mr. Roth has dropped the horror side of the hybrid all together and has decided to go completely science fiction on his next directorial project. The only detail currently known about his mystery film is that it's called Endangered Species, that Quentin Tarantino has once

Thomas Jane Channels Pulp Horror For Directorial Debut 'Dark Country'

'Tis the season for scary movies, so it's fitting that Thomas Jane's stylish, noir-fueled horror film "Dark Country" arrives on shelves this week. In his directorial debut, the "Punisher" actor not only makes his first bow behind the camera, but he also stars alongside Lauren German ("Hostel: Part II") and Ron Perlman ("Hellboy")—two actors not entirely unfamiliar with fright-friendly cinema.
Combining surreal, David Lynch-style visuals with a pulpy horror tale that would seem at home in old issues of "Tales From The Crypt" or "Creepy," Jane says comic books weren't far from his mind when he stepped behind the camera.
"I’ve been reading comic books since I was eight years old, and in comics, anything’s possible," Jane told MTV News. "They come up with angles that you could never shoot in life, and they really have to work hard to make that two-dimensional space feel three-dimensional,

Eli Roth Will Endanger Species (of Cotton)

The Bear Jew himself, Eli Roth (Hostel, Cabin Fever) has finally pushed through the media madness that followed Inglourious Basterds and is now showcasing the two simultaneous projects he’s been talking up for a while.
He’s wrapping up the script for his sci-fi flick Endangered Species while he gets ready for his Louisiana exorcism movie Cotton, directed by Daniel Stamm. One of these titles is boring, the other is seemingly nonsensical. Roth is shooting for the former to be completed by November alongside his expanded script of Thanksgiving (which we saw a glimpse of in 2007’s Grindhouse).
The writer/producer/director is tight-lipped about Endangered Species, only revealing to Variety that he intends to maintain his “sick sense of humor.” Also, his mentor Quentin Tarantino has supervised the script for Species and given notes along the way. Details on Cotton are sparse, but Roth told Bloody-Disgusting.com a

Actor Thomas Jane, of TV’s “Hung” and “Punisher” fame, stars in and makes his directorial debut with the stylistic horror thriller “Dark Country”, which arrives on DVD this October 6 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The film tells the suspenseful, twisted tale of newlyweds who make the regrettable decision of rescuing a sinister car crash survivor known only as “Bloody Face.” The movie’s unique visual flourishes belie the fact that it’s the work of a first time director, while its strong performances, notably from the sexy Lauren German (”Hostel: Part II”), serve as yet another reminder that an actor has no better friend behind the camera than the actor/director.
Hit the jump to read about journeyman actor Jane talking about his new journey into directing, the surprising big name star he called up for advice on directing yourself, and working with fanboy favorite and friend Ron Perlman.

With the It's Alive remake hitting home video on Tuesday, October 6th courtesy of First Look features, all sorts of goodness landed in our mailboxes today to share with you ... our dear and sexy, sexy, readers.
The remake follows a couple as they prepare for the birth of their new child. Unfortunately, the kid turns out to be a murderous creature that kills when scared - but this being a reimagining, the comparison pretty much ends there. While the original had the child, split from his parents, wreaking bloody havoc, here we have Bijou Philips (Venom, Hostel: Part II) as Lenore, forced into the role of the terrified mother facing mental ruin as she attempts to hide the beastly nature of her new bundle of joy.
Check out the green and red band trailers below and click the image for our still gallery.

Ever look at the art on a DVD and think to yourself, "Come on! I know they can do better than this!"? Yep, generic art can be a real downer, especially when it contain floating heads, etc. Sadly, the DVD for Thomas Jane's directorial debut Dark Country, which hits home video on October 6th, 2009, has been hit with generic art, but that doesn't mean there isn't anything else out there.
Film School Rejects dug up two really cool posters for the flick, one of which you can see below and the other you can hit up the above link for.

Today we've received some exclusive new posters for a little project that we've been keeping an eye on for a while now, the noir road trip thriller Dark Country from first time director Thomas Jane (The Punisher, HBO's Hung). Originally slated as a 3D theatrical release, it will now go straight to DVD on October 6th. And after seeing the official trailer that we posted back in July, I can't tell why it's not being released in theaters -- but alas, we'll take it any way we can get it. And we aren't going to let the direct-to-dvd stereotype scare us off, as the film has a very unique and cool feel to it.
The film stars Jane and Lauren German (Hostel: Part II) as a couple traveling through the desert from Las Vegas to California who come upon a mysterious stranger. After almost killing the stranger, they pick him up and begin their journey into darkness

Film director, writer, producer, and actor Eli Roth is the new spokesmodel for PETA's brand new anti-violence advertising campaign. In addition to directing and starring in an anti-violence TV PSA for the animal rights organization, he also poses for an anti-violence print ad that sees him posing with an animatronic boa.
No stranger to violence on screen, the actor however reminds people that the violence in his movies is fake, while at the same time reminds them that violence against animals is real and should be avoided. "While violence in the movies is make-believe, sadly, violence against animals is all too real. [L]et's leave the violence where it belongs: on the screen," he is quoted as saying in the PSA.
Interviewed by PETA about his involvement in the particular cause, Eli says "I have been ... forever linked with violence in movies, and that's Ok, 'cause to me it was always make-believe.

Interview: ‘Inglourious Basterds’ Mastermind Quentin Tarantino Does Chicago

Chicago – Venerated writer and Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino has no shame in admitting he’s a basterd. In fact, he’s deeply proud of it.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Tarantino charmed a packed Chicago crowd of onlookers and the press for the Aug. 18, 2009 red-carpet premiere of his newly controversial Nazi-killing film “Inglourious Basterds” inside AMC River East in downtown Chicago.
Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino of “Pulp Fiction” fame, “Inglourious Basterds” is a piece of bravura filmmaking that stars Brad Pitt, Mélanie Laurent, Christoph Waltz, Eli Roth (the director of “Hostel” and “Hostel: Part II”), Michael Fassbender, Diane Kruger and Daniel Brühl.
During the seemingly 2.490 seconds he spoke with this HollywoodChicago.com critic in a well-lit and sweaty interview on the “Inglourious Basterds” red carpet, Tarantino unsurprisingly but emphatically professed his love for The Weinstein Company (his production company for the film along with Universal Pictures) and in working with the Harvey and Bob Weinstein namesakes.
