Unexpected gem!
18 October 2008 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

I'm afraid I can't really understand the way in which this indie film has been slammed in some quarters. Admittedly some of the acting is a bit patchy, but the unknown leads Nathan Grubbs, particularly, and Gabriella Sfardini give quite excellent performances especially in the intense, dramatic scenes. The story does move slowly in the first half of the movie, but long before the end it proves to be a powerful indictment against drug addiction, and the scene with the straight-jacketed Grubbs in the semi-padded room is both poignant and powerful. The street and river scenes of New Orleans, before the the dreadful devastation of Hurricane Katrina, lend great authenticity to the proceedings. In fact, this is a gripping and absorbing movie which is undoubtedly very underrated.
