(500) Days of Summer

Some may feel that the film is not groundbreaking as a romantic comedy and is cute at most. However, (500) Days of Summer is certainly one of the most fascinating romantic films I've ever seen because of the way the relation between the two lovers is presented to us.
Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) works as a writer for a greeting cards company. His boss has hired a new assistant, Summer (Zooey Deschanel). Obviously, Tom immediately falls head over heels for her. Summer accepts to go out with him. However, when Tom wants to take their relation to the next level, she tells him that she just wants to be a friend. As a matter of fact, Summer cherishes her independence and doesn't believe that she needs a lover to be over the moon.
Honestly, I dug (500) Days of Summer because it's one of the most realistic depictions of women behaviour I've seen in films.

Poll: Which Golden Globe nominee will win best comedy/musical picture?

Normally, Golden Globe voters automatically choose successful musicals in the race for best comedy/musical picture. Past champs include "Sweeney Todd," "Dreamgirls," "Walk the Line," "Chicago," "Moulin Rouge," "Evita," etc. However, box office blockbuster "Mamma Mia" lost last year to "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," probably because film critics weren't dancing in the aisles alongside crazed moviegoers.
That means "Nine" might be in trouble at the Golden Globes this year, if it doesn't rally soon with reviewers. It's only scoring 26% at RottenTomatoes.
Was the anti-"Mamma Mia" vote last year a slap at Meryl Streep? If so, she's got two films in contention in this category now: "It's Complicated" and "Julie & Julia."
Globers don't usually endorse laffers with a fratboy sensibility like "The Hangover." They didn't even nominate "Knocked Up" or "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," but I hear that Hfpa members are popping champagne corks over this one this year.
"(500) Days of Summer" was a surprise inclusion,

The slender star doesn’t follow a strict diet and indulges in her favourite fast food treats regularly – even stopping off for a calorific meal before winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’ earlier this year.
She said: “I ate an In-n-Out burger and then I went to the red carpet. What's so surprising about that? I do it, like, once a week or once every two weeks. It's my little treat for myself. I love the Double-Double with fries."
The actress also revealed she relies on her iPod to get her through working on a film.
The ‘Nine’ actress always creates a soundtrack to help connect with the character she plays in all her movies and only listens to a limited selection of songs to help keep focused on what she is doing.
She explained to Parade.com: “It helps me very much to have my iPod.

Vampires were everywhere, Hollywood failed to excite, and British cinema ploughed a familiar furrow
The year began with the usual flurry of serious major movies given late December screenings in Los Angeles to qualify for the Oscars. They're now forgotten or vaguely regarded as semi-classics: The Reader, Che, Slumdog Millionaire, Frost/Nixon, Revolutionary Road, The Wrestler, Gran Torino, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
It soon became apparent that horror movies would be the dominant genre once again, with vampires the pre-eminent sub-species, the most profitable inevitably being New Moon, the latest in Stephenie Meyers's Twilight saga, the best the subtle Swedish Let the Right One In and the worst the British horror spoof Lesbian Vampire Killers.
Documentaries continued to flourish, introducing us to fascinating new worlds: Afghan TV talent shows (Afghan Star), Australian exploitation cinema (Not Quite Hollywood), haute couture (The September Issue). Animation thrived, the 3-D comeback threatened

Even though her onscreen hook up with Scarlett Johansson in Vicky Cristina Barcelona wasn't the sexy Sapphic scene it was (overly) hyped up to be, Penelope Cruz won me (and countless other lady-lovers) over in last year's Woody Allen film. Oh, and she also won over the Academy, snagging Best Supporting Actress for the role and becoming the first Spanish-speaking actress to win an Oscar.
Personally, it was the combination of her hilariously frantic personality, big dark eyes and pouty face when she asked ScarJo, "Don't you know how much we love you?" that really sealed the deal. Nevermind that she starred alongside her real-life beau Javier Bardem.
Basically, any time a straight actress is down with playing gay (or a character with not-entirely-straight inclinations), they earn bonus points in my book — especially if it's fitting with the story and not just a gratuitous hook up.
Now, Cruz is sure

"Nine" looks like a good bet to win the Golden Globe for best comedy/musical picture. Voters almost always go for successful musicals here ("Sweeney Todd," "Dreamgirls," "Walk the Line," "Chicago," "Moulin Rouge," "Evita"). But wait! They spurned "Mamma Mia" for "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" last year, but that tuner wasn't respected by film critics. "The Hangover" could be a threat, which is surprising. Usually, members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. don't take Yankee frat-boy comedies seriously. Globe voters didn't nominate "Knocked Up" or "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," but inside sources say members are toasting "The Hangover" with three cheers. We don't know yet what their reaction is to "It's Complicated." It's being screened for Hfpa members

Academy Award winner Penelope Cruz has worked with some of the best and most innovative filmmakers around the world, including Woody Allen, Rob Marshall and Pedro Almodovar. Broken Embraces marks the fourth time that she has teamed up with Almodovar, this time playing the love of a filmmaker, who leaves him devastated when she dies in a car accident.
During a press conference for this latest Spanish language film, Penelope Cruz talked about playing powerful women, working with Almodovar since she was a teenager, and how she really doesn’t like to be labeled. Read what she had to say after the jump
Question: Over the years, you’ve done so many powerful roles and you’re obviously very comfortable in your own skin, portraying women who have maybe done drugs or who are in power. Is there any role that you would not do or that you have said no to?

A Serious Man may be getting rave reviews – but it's like nothing the Coens have made before. Joe Queenan on weird one-offs and the directors who make them
About halfway through the very funny, very disturbing, very ethnic new film A Serious Man, the modern-day Job who is the serious man in question climbs up on to the roof of his ghastly 1960s Minneapolis suburban home and tries to adjust the antenna to improve his TV reception. Beleaguered on all fronts – conjugally, professionally, medically – Larry Gopnik, a dorky physics professor who may be about to lose his job and is very likely to lose his family, is a bright, principled Jewish man whose children have begged him to fix the antenna so they can watch F Troop, an idiotic 1960s comedy. Many of Larry's travails unfold as songs from Jefferson Airplane's seminal 1967 LP Surrealistic Pillow play in the background.

'The Road' Explores the Knife-Edge of Human Entropy
28 November 2009 12:00 AM, PST
| CinemaSpy
| See recent CinemaSpy news
»
The post-apocalyptic drama The Road begins with shots of barking dogs, blooming flowers, and nuzzling horses, but it is soon revealed that these everyday pleasures are fading memories for its protagonists. With a palette of grays and browns, it quickly shifts to the leafless trees and broken ground of a wasteland that has only barely survived an unnamed catastrophe. The world smolders when it doesn't all-out burn, and the vestiges of humanity struggle to survive and retain the things that made them human.
Amid bands of roving cannibals, an unnamed father (Viggo Mortensen, Eastern Promises) and his son (Kodi Smit-McPhee, Romulus, My Father) have left their home behind and are traveling toward the coast with hopes that the warmer weather and proximity to the ocean will provide a haven. The Man remembers the world before, but The Boy was born to The Man's wife (Charlize Theron, Hancock) after the apocalypse.
