Film review: The Box

An intriguing premise turns in to 115 minutes of codswallop. Peter Bradshaw squirms away

There are some films that confront the viewer with profound ethical dilemmas, agonising moral choices. In this one, an ageing man with a horrible face approaches a happily married woman with a proposition that could earn her $1m. Oh, heavens to Betsy, you are probably thinking, it's that Robert Redford back again, the incorrigible old goat, making another of his indecent proposals: a sackful of cash in exchange for the chance to let his expensive trousers and pants pool round his ankles while he puts you on the receiving end of a one-off rogering. How absolutely loathsome. And yet it is a lot of money, so gosh, would I? Would I?

But it is not Robert Redford. This time it is Frank Langella, playing a man with an appalling wound to the side of his face, dressed »

Do Adam Lambert And Howie Mandel Share A Stylist?

2 December 2009 11:20 AM, PST | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Last week, Adam Lambert sat down with MTV News' Jim Cantiello for an extended conversation about a variety of topics, including the development of his new album For Your Entertainment, his controversial performance at the American Music Awards, the aftermath of "American Idol," his new music video and a host of other topics. (If you want to catch up with any of the excellent Lambert footage that came out of that interview, be sure to check out "Extended Play: Adam Lambert.")

When he showed up for his interview, Lambert wore a casual-looking blue flannel shirt that recalled the grunge era. Considering Lambert's eclectic image, it added another wrinkle to his ever-evolving style. So imagine everyone's surprise when "Deal or No Deal" host Howie Mandel showed up on ABC's "Good Morning America" for an interview wearing the exact same shirt. Is this Mandel's way of tapping into a more rocking side of his personality? »

The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive

Who's wrong and who's right in the unfortunate saga of Beanie Sigel vs. Jay-z? That's between those two gentlemen. We hate to see them at odds, but we will thank the Roc and State Property for giving us some of the best music in the last 10 years. Backstage at the Highline Ballroom last week for the 50 Cent concert, Beanie told MTV News that he's telling a story about Jay with his dis records.

"I couldn't tell you that," he said of his ultimate plan. "I'd be defeating the purpose on what I was doing if I tell people what's my strategy, what my plan is gonna be. But then again, I could tell you what's my strategy, »

Let Us Now Bash Robin Williams

23 November 2009 6:30 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Who is Sarah Ball and why is she saying awful things about Emo Phillips? And, why is she not saying awful things about Robin Williams? I.E., if she is going to bash those twelve, she ought to also be brave enough, and have the critical eye required, to take on sacred cow comedians like Williams and George Carlin. Okay, first, let's run down the twelve she does go after: 1) Larry the Cable Guy: Is funny to the type of people who think Larry the Cable Guy is funny. And, he's likable, likable, likable. That's how he Git(s) Er Done. 2) Carlos Mencia: Ms. Ball got this one right. (If Carlos Mencia didn't steal jokes he'd be the unfunny-ist comedian since ... Carlos Mencia.) 3) Howie Mandel: Is not doing stand-up when he's hosting Deal or No Deal - he's... »

Jedward: too good for the likes of us

23 November 2009 4:23 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

John and Edward, The X Factor's most delicate and exotic flowers, have been cut down. But we'll be seeing them again...

Along the southern rim of India's Western Ghats mountain range exists the kurinji – a small flower so breathtaking that it only bursts into flower once every 12 years and then, as if ashamed by its own magnificence, promptly hides itself away again. Why am I telling you this? Because Jedward, the act cruelly eliminated from The X Factor last night, were music's kurinji.

John and Edward were ethereal butterflies. They were too beautiful to live. They brought a sense of fun to X Factor like nobody else before them could. They could sing. They could dance. They could probably walk on water. They were statistically less good than Same Difference from 2007. And now Jedward have gone. And it's all your fault.

Placed in a sing-off against Olly Murs, Jedward never stood a chance. »

Thankfully, Deal or No Deal host Howie Mandel finally put the last nail in The Jay Leno Show's coffin by giving the big faced host his own desk.

You can buy a lot of chest-hair-baring T-shirts with $75 million. Forbes magazine estimates that "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell pulls down that much loot every year, making him the top-earning man in prime time in the U.S.

That haul easily put him ahead of the #2 gentleman on the list, "The Apprentice" host Donald Trump ($50 million), not to mention Cowell's frequent verbal sparring partner, the second-hardest-working-man-in-show- business, "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest, who rounds out the top three at $38 million. The calculations are based on estimated pre-tax earnings from June 1, 2008 to June 1, 2009.

Peak of more than 15 million watch as Lucie Jones is voted off The X Factor – but Jedward are reprieved

Jedward's success damages the twins, Cowell and The X Factor

The X Factor powered to a record audience for a second successive week with a peak of more than 15 million viewers watching twins John and Edward Grimes survive at the expense of Lucie Jones last night, Sunday 8 November.

ITV1's hit reality talent show averaged 14.4 million viewers, 49% of the audience, between 8pm and 9pm – up from 13.9 million last week.

The X Factor hit a peak of 15.4 million viewers in its final 15 minutes, up from 14.7 million last week, according to unofficial overnight figures. ITV said the show's five-minute peak hit 16.6 million, its highest ever, and a 54% share of the audience between 8.50pm and 8.55pm.

Unsurprisingly the Simon Cowell show saw off all the opposition, including BBC1's Antiques Roadshow, which had 5.9 million viewers, »

It is thought that the BBC and Sky have now expressed interest in taking over the daytime show after its Channel 4 deal runs out at the end of next year. Bruce Willis swapped Hollywood for the small screen and showed his generous side with a recent charity appearance on the Turkish version of TV game show Deal Or No Deal.

The Die Hard star and his wife Emma Heming agreed to line up alongside host Acun Ilicali on a special celebrity edition of the programme earlier this month. It was recorded in a studio in Istanbul for broadcast on a Turkish TV network.

Details of how much money the couple won for its chosen charity - Wish A Wish - had not been released as WENN went to press.

Willis and Heming are not the first stars to appear on Turkey's adaptation of the gambling show - Christina Aguilera took part in the same programme last year. »

Noel Edmonds has reportedly bought his own taxi so he can avoid sitting in traffic jams. According to the Sunday Mirror, the Deal Or No Deal presenter was sighted driving in bus lanes on four occasions over the course of three days last week. Staff at the Bristol studios where Edmonds films his quiz show said that the star purchased the taxi specifically so he could avoid getting caught up in congestion. NBC's Perfect 10 looks perfectly ridiculous

1 October 2009 4:50 PM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Think Deal or No Deal is too easy? Want more interactive for that big prize? NBC might have the answer. They've ordered Perfect 10, a one-hour game show where contestants have 60 seconds to complete ten tasks for $1 million; tasks like unraveling an entire roll of toilet paper with your body.

Producers say they've developed easily replicated challenges because they want us to play along at home, like how we yell prices to contestants on The Price is Right. There are no prizes for participating at home, unless you count having to figure out what to do with an entire roll of toilet paper strewn about your living room.

They're even going to set up a website where we can see 50 demonstrations of tasks people on the show might be asked to perform. Which means we can start right now trying to figure out what those might be. Fold a basket full of inside out shirts? »

Probst Bows To New Emmy Host Harris

21 September 2009 1:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

American TV star Jeff Probst bowed down to new Emmy host Neil Patrick Harris at the 61st annual ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday, admitting he botched his presenting duties last year.

Survivor star Probst and fellow reality TV personalities American Idol's Ryan Seacrest, Project Runway's Heidi Klum, Dancing with the Stars' Tom Bergeron and Deal or No Deal's Howie Mandel faced harsh criticism from their fellow celebrities after putting on lacklustre skits and song-and-dance numbers last September.

But Harris had the star-studded audience smiling from the start after appearing in a tuxedo to open the show with a rousing Las Vegas-style musical number.

And when Probst was honoured as the Best Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program, he admitted he had been outdone by the How I Met Your Mother star.

Turning to Harris, Probst joked, "Neil Patrick Harris, this is how you host the Emmys! Nice job." »

Britain Likely To Allow Product Placements

14 September 2009 3:41 PM, PDT | Studio Briefing - TV News | See recent Studio Briefing - TV News news »

The British government is expected to lift the ban on product placements this week, reports published in London Sunday newspapers said, presumably leaking comments from a speech that Culture Minister Ben Bradshaw is expected to deliver to a convention of the Royal Television Society on Wednesday. Removing the ban is expected to apply only to commercial broadcasters and not to the BBC. It would also remain in place for children's shows. Peter Bazalgette, the former head of British reality-show producer Endemol, whose programs include such international hits as Big Brother, Deal or No Deal, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and Wipeout, wrote in the London Sunday Mirror that the move was "hugely overdue." He warned, however, that if product-placement is "overdone or tasteless, viewers will switch off." He noted that such ads already appear on British TV via U.S. movies. 'X Factor' Olly won £10 on gameshow

X Factor hopeful Olly Murs appeared on Deal Or No Deal but left with just £10, reports say. The Daily Star Sunday claims that Murs went on the show in 2007 to win money to help with doctors' fees for his ill mother. However, after rejecting an early offer of £20,000, the singer ended up with just £10. Noel Edmonds reportedly called it "the most appalling run of luck in the history of the game". Weekly TV Wrap Up - June 25, 2009

25 June 2009 11:48 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Welcome to my weekly TV Wrap Up.

This week we’re chatting about the NCIS cast, Chuck season 3 insights, a bit of Fringe cast news and I ask a question about a character from Lost.  I’m also going to touch on yet another alien invasion show from TNT.  Also have some details on the DVD / Blu-ray release of season one of Lie To Me.

I wrap it up with my usual look at how shows did in the ratings from last week.

Let’s get on with it.

.

NCIS Spin-off Adds Cast

Linda Hunt will be joining the cast of the NCIS spin-off as a hard-nosed former film industry technician who oversees the “backroom” support staff.

Of note, Louise Lombard was let go from the staff, as the cast seems to be constantly evolving.

Is it me, or will we have a hard time getting past the ‘ghosts’ from Linda Hunt’s past? »
