Dwayne Johnson on His Rock-Solid Empire and Walk of Fame Honor

Dwayne Johnson on His Rock-Solid Empire and Walk of Fame Honor
It’s midnight and my phone rings. “Hey, E-Wag!” exclaims a deeply masculine, yet comforting and chipper voice.

It’s Dwayne Johnson. The pro wrestler-turned-superstar is calling from the car in Hawaii on his way to catch an overnight plane from the first stop of his “Jumanji” press tour to the next leg of the global gabfest in Paris.

Despite squeezing in a call during his only 45 minutes of free time, in transit, nonetheless, Johnson’s enthusiasm and focus is magnetic. His personal greeting to this reporter is perfectly in line with how he interacts with his 175 million followers on social media every day, and is evident of The Rock’s unique knack to form a genuine connection with everyone from fan from studio executive. His commitment to a simple phone interview is exemplary of how he attaches himself to each and every project — and there are a lot of them.

This past year,

Fox Snags Legal Dramedy from “Guilt” Creators Kathryn Price and Nichole Millard

Price and Millard: Freeform

Guilt” creators Kathryn Price and Nichole Millard have scored a script commitment plus penalty from Fox for their new project, “One Call That’s All.” Deadline writes that the network secured the legal dramedy “in a competitive situation.”

Inspired by the South’s most successful accident attorney, Ken Nugent, the project is “described as part legal show, part family dramedy,” and “revolves around a larger-than-life personal-injury attorney in Atlanta” and his huge family, all of whom work for him — including his ex-wife.

“One Call That’s All” is written and executive produced by Price and Millard, who have an overall deal with Lionsgate TV.

“When we met Ken Nugent and his larger-than-life family in Atlanta, Georgia, we knew we’d hit TV gold,” said Price and Millard. “We love quirky legal shows and big, fun family dramedies, and the Nugents’ personal-injury firm gives us both in one outrageous package.”

Guilt” debuted on Freeform in 2016 and ran for one season before being cancelled. The mystery drama centered on a London-based American student who is accused of murder when her roommate is found dead.

Price and Millard co-wrote Dwayne Johnson-starrer “The Game Plan” and “Fallen,” a fantasy about a teen girl who falls in love with an angel.

Fox Snags Legal Dramedy from “Guilt” Creators Kathryn Price and Nichole Millard was originally published in Women and Hollywood on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Dwayne Johnson Isn’t Your Average Superstar: How The Rock Has Built a Career With Smart Choices

Dwayne Johnson Isn’t Your Average Superstar: How The Rock Has Built a Career With Smart Choices
Like most famous people, Dwayne Johnson’s Wikipedia page includes a nifty sidebar that includes bare bones facts, like birthday and age, with a couple of lines reserved for “occupation.” Johnson’s “occupation” line is almost amusingly slim — it simply reads, “Actor, producer, singer, professional wrestler,” which is an understated way of saying “this guy does a lot.” And it doesn’t even mention his best-selling memoir, or his charity work, and “professional wrestler” hardly indicates the tremendous success he’s had in the ring.

And “actor”? That’s a very concise tribute to his blockbuster career on the big screen, one that’s amounted to dozens of credits and an estimated lifetime box office gross (domestic only!) that totals over $2.7 billion. With Johnson toplining the early summer’s biggest hit so far, the box office-dominating “Fate of the Furious” and a non-stop barrage of other features on the way,

12 Movies to Watch After You See ‘The Fate of the Furious’

Assorted recommendations inspired by the multifarious sequel.Sorry, Marky Mark, but you’ve already got a car-based franchise.

By the time you’re done watching The Fate of the Furious, you’re likely to have forgotten some of its distinctly differing parts. The sequel begins as one thing then becomes another and another and another, delivering a thrilling mix of action sequences that don’t quite fit together as a fluid and cohesive whole.

I was reminded of a number of dissimilar movies while watching the eighth Fast and the Furious installment, so this week’s list of recommendations could be an even more mixed assortment than usual. But I have no interest in prescribing bad-tasting medicine like The Game Plan in response to Dwayne Johnson’s soccer dad scene. I’m also ignoring Jason Statham’s cheeky insult reminding Johnson and us all of his dumb Hercules movie.

Instead of going with the usual chronological trip

This Is Us star Chrissy Metz on Kate’s Shocking Confession, Jack’s Death and the Heartbreaking Finale

This Is Us star Chrissy Metz on Kate’s Shocking Confession, Jack’s Death and the Heartbreaking Finale
— A version of this article originally appeared on EW.com.

Since the early days of This Is Us, we’ve known that Jack and Kate shared a unique and emotionally charged bond. It was Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) who worked magic and overtime to try to build up young Kate’s self-esteem, through fantastical t-shirt tales and highly choreographed pose-strikings. It was Kate (Chrissy Metz) who told us that Jack was indeed dead, way back in “The Game Plan” when she breathed as deep as she ever had and showed then-boyfriend-now-fiancé Toby (Chris Sullivan) the urn containing Jack’s ashes with which she watches Steelers games.

Twist Is Us: All the Twists from ‘This Is Us,’ Ranked and Graded — A Running List (Updated)
Just when you thought you were out, “This” pulled you back in.

When it comes to Dan Fogelman’s freshman NBC drama, audiences looking to narrow their list of must-see TV may have felt a little like Michael Corleone this fall. “This Is Us” has been labeled the “best new show” by some, and decried for its “cloying sentiment” by others. IndieWire wasn’t a huge fan of the pilot, but, like many other viewers, we wondered what could possibly come next. Would “This Is Us” become a show with enough truth to overcome the schmaltz? Could its superhuman heart be passed on to its one-dimensional characters? And would Milo Ventimiglia ever shave that ‘stache?

In short, would “This Is Us” be worth watching?

Through five episodes, we’re still not sure. We’ve seen signs of promise and despair, but one constant remains: the twists. “This Is Us” was

Tuesday’s episode of This Is Us contained a simple story about Kate (Chrissy Metz) wanting to watch football all by herself before ultimately realizing that she’d have to incorporate her significant other into her weekly ritual if she wanted to move forward in her relationship.

And what Toby (Chris Sullivan) would realize is that Kate wasn’t actually watching football alone. She was cheering right alongside her father. Or at least his ashes.

Yes, “The Game Plan” revealed (or confirmed, depending on your speculation skills) that Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) is no longer alive.

The bad news: He does so as a pile of ashes in a nondescript urn. Yep, it’s as we feared — Milo Ventimiglia’s character is, indeed, dead. (Though it doesn’t stop him from wearing his team’s colors, which is dedication in the extreme.)

Review: 'This Is Us' both scores and fumbles with 'The Game Plan'

Review: 'This Is Us' both scores and fumbles with 'The Game Plan'
A review of tonight's This Is Us coming up just as soon as I'm a wise old owl in a Pixar movie... This Is Us is the biggest new network hit of the fall (in the 18-49 demo, anyway; Bull and Designated Survivor have slightly larger audiences), showing that there's still an appetite for "soft" family dramas if the execution and the marketing are good enough. Creatively, though, the show is still uneven at this early stage, with each episode weaving back and forth between lovingly-crafted dramatic beats and ones that feel more hastily assembled. Last week's episode, for instance, had great Randall stories in both past and present illustrating what it's been like for him to grow up black in a white world, as well as a beautiful final image of the Big Three napping on top of their father at the end of a long day by the pool,

In the fifth episode of the NBC drama, entitled “The Game Plan,” the Pearson family in the past consists only of Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore). As the two become die-hard Pittsburgh Steeers fans in 1980, they’re also freewheeling young newlyweds who absolutely do not ever want to have kids. That is, until Jack changes his mind and...

Sa Leitao, Castro Power Up Brazil’s AfroReggae (Exclusive)

In a big move on Brazil’s production and, indeed, Ngo scene, two of its most decisive film execs, former Rio secretary of culture and RioFilme president Sergio Sa Leitao and Christian de Castro, a founding partner of consulting firm Zooks, have joined forces to tap investment and build a first movie-tv slate at the Rio-based and Ngo-owned production company AfroReggae Audiovisual.

Sa Leitao will serve as AfroReggae CEO and Castro as its CFO.

The rebooted company has tapped what its partners described Friday as a “significant” amount of investment from a group of high-net individuals including three former presidents of Brazilian banks, led by Arminio Fraga of Gavea Investimentos, as well as further investment from Funcine Investimage 1, a fund controlled by Thierry Peronne.

AfroReggae’s first production slate, now in development, features nine TV series and four movies. Its flagship project, a fiction feature/TV series, “Das-Anti Kidnapping Division,
