In 2010, when New Orleans Saint defensive star Steve Gleason first learned of his Als diagnosi, his wife Michel was pregnant. Instinctively, he picked up a camera and started talking to his yet-to-be-born son — and so began the documentation of a man’s determination to tackle his disease head-on. In 2012, Gleason brought aboard local filmmaker David Lee and Ty Minton-Small, a longtime friend, who embedded themselves in the Gleasons’ home and captured the ex-football player as he faced rapidly deteriorating physical abilities, spent time with his son River and reconciled with his father.

Cannes -- Life is opportunity. More than ever before, I believe that. I have to believe that. In just over a week, I turn 44, and I stand at the edge of some major upheavals in my life. It has taken me a longer time to reach this point than I would have liked, but I eventually realized that inertia is no way to live. I would rather confront the pain and the disappointment of sifting through the ashes of a marriage burnt to the ground than continue to simply drift along hoping for some miraculous change for the better. There is nothing more terrifying to me than change, and I feel like that's true for most of us. We accept the way things are and consign dreams of change to being just that… dreams. The courage it takes to affect real change is not something we come by easily, and...

Distributors throughout the Mena region face a spectacular range of challenges, including a lack of screens, curfews and soaring piracy. Melanie Goodfellow profiles the major players.
The recent period of rapid political and economic change across Mena has resulted in wildly different theatrical fortunes from territory to territory.
Saudi Arabia continues to ban movie theatres but neighbouring UAE and Qatar are witnessing a huge increase in screen numbers and multiplexes and a resulting growth in box office, which is spilling over into Jordan and Iraq.
A 16-screen multiplex, a partnership between Ibrahim Taher’s Al Taher for Cinemas, Eagle Films and Selim Ramia & Co, opened in Amman over the summer. Lebanese exhibitor and distributor Empire is planning a 14-screen venue for the Kurdish Iraqi city of Erbil.
In Egypt, total box-office grosses are down compared to last year after nightly curfews led to the cancellation of evening screenings during the Eid Al-Fitr festivities, traditionally a busy...

Nb: Films by Robert Beavers, Peter Hutton, and Luther Price were unavailable for preview. However, I said some very nice things about these men and their work in general over at The Dissolve.
In years past, I have attempted to present this extended article as a preview; my aim has been to send it off into the world either the day before of the day of Tiff's kick-off. That has proven impossible this year, and, dear reader, I am heartily sorry for having offended thee... But the fact that Wavelengths is a beat that is becoming harder and harder for one person to adequately cover is undoubtedly a sign of good health. Since last year, when Tiff enfolded the former Visions section (a space for formally adventurous narrative features) into Wavelengths (Tiff's experimental showcase), not only has interest in the section grown exponentially. The section can now more fully reflect...

The Belgian-born Georges Simenon (1903-1989) wrote over 200 novels (by Wikipedia's count) plus many shorter works. The New York Times estimates that number (including his memoirs and nonfiction works) as being between 400 and 500. Simenon's creation, Inspector Jules Maigret, who appeared in about 75 works, "ranks only after Sherlock Holmes as the world's best known fictional detective." (I'm not sure how Poirot feels about that.) Of course, such popularity could not be overlooked by the entertainment industry, and imdb.com has compiled a list of 132 movies and TV shows based on his oeuvre. And now the Anthology Archives, with Kathy Geritz and the Pacific Film Archive, is presenting 14 of these celluloid joys within the series appropriately entitled Cine-Simenon: George Simenon on Film, which runs until August 21st.
Before viewing the celluloid Simenon, I decided to nestle down with the textural Simenon, and within a week, I had plowed through five of his works,...

Sean Penn has blasted his peers and the global media for turning their back on Haiti at a glitzy Cannes Film Festival gala.
The Oscar winner was among the guests of honour at the black-tie Haiti: Carnival in Cannes fundraiser to benefit the victims of the 2010 earthquake, but there was something he felt he needed to get off his chest first.
At a press conference before Friday's bash, he suggested celebrities and news networks who were committed to helping those left homeless by the natural disaster in the months after the tragedy are no longer interested.
Taking aim at the media on the red carpet, the outspoken actor and activist raged, "It's not only celebrities who went for a day. It's the whole f**king world. It's all of you.
"The reason we have Haiti fatigue is because there was never a commitment in the first place."
Penn was joined by writer/director Paul Haggis and model Petra Nemcova, who like him, helm relief organisations working in Haiti.
The I Am Sam star created the J/P Haitian Relief Organization in the weeks after the earthquake to help rebuild schools and homes, and provide for the desperate locals left destitute after the disaster. His work continues and he has become a regular visitor to Haiti, taking TV news crews and celebrities like Oprah Winfrey with him to help raise interest in the cause.
At the press conference, Penn also urged U.S. President Barack Obama to meet with Haiti's newly-elected leader Michel Joseph Martelly, stating, "It is time for our formidable and elegant president to stand side by side with the new president of Haiti."...

Sean Penn isn't a fan of slacktivists. On Friday in Cannes, the actor-activist slammed the media for abandoning Haiti after the devastating earthquake in January 2010. "It's not only celebrities who went for a day," Penn told reporters, as excerpted by TheWrap.com. "It's the whole f--king world. It's all of you." "The reason we have Haiti fatigue is because there was never a commitment in the first place," he added. Penn also called upon Barack Obama to meet with Haiti's newly elected president Michel Joseph Martelly. "It's time our elegant and formidable president stood side by side [with Martelly]," he said. The actor was part of a...

We’re all familiar with sports like soccer, basketball, and tennis, partly because of the popularity of gorgeous stars like David Beckham and Rafael Nadal. But what about the sports that don’t get nearly as much attention on Espn? Well it turns out that there is a whole world of hotties, just waiting to be ogled out there and we decided that it was our duty to bring them to you. Enjoy!
Randy de Puniet - Motorcycle Racing
Randy de Puniet doesn’t have to be a badass motorcycle rider to be super sexy, although it certainly does not hurt. De Puniet is a Grand Prix motorcyclist, which has to be one of the scariest sports imaginable. Not only is de Puniet an athlete, he is also a member of the Champions for Peace Club, which aims to create world peace through sport. This definitely increases his appeal, because world peace is totally sexy.

Plus Margaret Cho's new music, what is replacing As the World Turns, and The CW is tops with Tater Tots.
The latest casting rumor in advance of Comic-Con is likely to catch the attention of AfterElton.com reader AddisonDewitt. A remake that I can get behind (because it can’t be worse than the original) is Judge Dredd, and the rumored actor passing judgment is Karl Urban.
E! has announced their Tater Top Award winners, and it’s about as fair and balanced as Fox News. But other than the wins for House, The CW cleaned up, and where else can Gossip Girl or Vampire Diaries win something?
Microsoft has found a way to make their upcoming Windows 7 Phone popular – they’re giving one to each of their 90,000 employees. Cool work perk if you can get it, and don’t mind rebooting in the middle of your calls.

Late yesterday the SXSW Fim Festival, which runs from March 12-20 in Austin, TX, announced the full lineup of films that will be screening at this year’s event. And baby, it’s quite a list. Mixing big name films with intimate indie gems, the sheer number of films and the vast array of talented filmmakers is sure to be a hit with attendees and critics alike.
This lineup includes premieres of studio films such as Universal’s MacGruber, Lionsgate’s teen superhero actioneer Kick-Ass and smaller films like Tim Blake Nelson’s Leaves of Grass, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs, Michel Gondry’s The Thorn in the Heart and Steven Soderbergh’s And Everything Is Going Fine. With so many films to watch, it will be very difficult to find time to seem them all during the events nine days. But hell, we’re going to try.

The 2010 SXSW Film Festival and Conference has announced its initial slate of titles. The list is rife with hot world premieres (Kick-Ass), films fresh from Sundance (The Runaways, Cyrus), hot titles from the 2009 editions of Tiff and Cannes that haven't had much U.S. play (Enter the Void, Dogtooth, Trash Humpers), interesting documentaries (Lemmy, The People v. George Lucas) and much, much more. Simon Rumley's Red, White & Blue, which has received much praise on Twitch based on its Iffr screenings, will have its North American premiere.
Midnight programming courtesy of Fantastic Fest is also back with titles like Higanjima, Monsters, Serbian Film, Outcast, and a yet to be announced special film. Keep eye out for SXSW coverage at Twitch, but for now, pursue the massive list below (descriptions courtesy of SXSW).

Those who have already read L'amant (The Lover) knows why it's extremely hard to adapt a novel of French novelist Marguerite Duras into a film. Yours truly hasn't seen the film The Lover. However, as for this film, all I can tell you is that it bores you to death because of its slow pace and its badly written dialogues. All in all, the excellent cinematography can't help the film.
In the French Indochina (Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos) of the 1930s, a widow (Isabelle Hupert) invested her savings in a rice field in Cambodia. However, she feels that she's got ripped off by the colonial authorities. In fact, she has difficulty to pay back the mortgage on her land and it's always flooded by typhoons of the South China Sea. This is why the widow plans to build a dam to make profits. However, as she tries to improve her situation,...
