Dynasty: revisiting an 80s soap cheese-fest

Catherine Pearson Oct 11, 2017

With the remake of the 1980s soap opera arriving today, what better time to take a nostalgia-filled lookback at Dynasty?

Cast your mind back, if you can, to the year of 1981. Bucks Fizz, Adam and the Ants and Soft Cell were storming the charts, Only Fools And Horses aired its first series on BBC One and Gregory’s Girl was playing in a cinema near you. Meanwhile, stateside, ABC had cooked up a suitably glamorous and scandalous competitor to Dallas, the CBS drama packed full of Stetsons and suspense. The world may have recently discovered who shot J.R., but there was still plenty of room for the Carringtons.

Enter Dynasty, a show based around the business and family of oil tycoon Blake Carrington (John Forsythe) whose recent marriage to his former secretary Krystle (Linda Evans) was making waves within the family mansion. With the Colby family

Blind Date 2017: is dating TV still innocent enough?

Jamie Andrew Jun 16, 2017

Can lovely, innocent Blind Date really exist in the same tawdry world as Take Me Out?

Blind Date is coming back this weekend. So much has changed since the 1980s, both on TV and in society itself, that what returns to our screens may not be a straight-forward, fully-intact teleport of the format, but rather a mutant mish-mash: a half-fly Jeff Goldblum of a show just begging to be put out of its misery. The truth of this inevitable transformation can be seen in the steps already taken up the light-entertainment evolutionary ladder, most notably in the DNA of ITV's long-running post-Blind Date offering, Take Me Out.

Prince Charles‘s goddaughter, English socialite Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, has died. She was 45 years old.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Prince of Wales and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, said they were “deeply saddened” by her death. She had been battling a brain tumor.

Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson, another family friend, also issued a statement of condolence. Like Palmer-Tomkinson, Ferguson hails from an aristocratic family in Dummer, a village in southeast England.

“The York Family are so shocked by this tragic news of the magnificent, beautifully energetic soul of Tara,” Ferguson, Prince Andrew’s former wife, said

Jeremy Kyle Show rapped over sex and orgasm comments on Easter Sunday

Morning show included content that was unsuitable for children and ITV dipped the sound 130 times to mask offensive language, says watchdog

The Jeremy Kyle Show breached broadcasting rules with offensive language, aggressive confrontations and sexual references on the morning of Easter Sunday, Ofcom has found.

The broadcasting watchdog was responding to a complaint about an edition of the ITV show on 27 March, with one item titled “Did you sleep with my boyfriend and is he your baby’s dad?”

Danny Dyer on Jeremy Kyle: "I despise every bone in his stuck-up, sanctimonious body"

Danny Dyer doesn't just hate controversial talk show host Jeremy Kyle - he "despises every bone in his stuck-up, sanctimonious, two-faced body".

Isis, dildos and a miniature Queen Vic: 12 eye-opening extracts from Danny Dyer's new book

The EastEnders star lets rip at the TV presenter in his new book Life Lessons from the East End, and reveals his recent discovery that Kyle supports the same football team as him was one of the "most depressing facts" he'd heard in years.

"Look, there's a golden rule in life. West Ham don't allow wankers. I despise Jeremy Kyle, every bone in his stuck-up, sanctimonious, two-faced body," Dyer writes. "He licks his mobile phone for comfort. That's what he says in his autobiography.

"Try this quote from him, Jeremy says: 'The reason I lick my [golf] balls in the way is probably more strange than the licking of the balls themselves. It's

In Defence Of... The Jeremy Kyle Show after 10 years: ITV's high-octane guilty pleasure

It was only ever meant to be a temporary stop-gap while Trisha was off-air, but fast-forward 10 years and The Jeremy Kyle Show remains a staple of ITV's daytime schedule.

Say the name 'Jeremy Kyle' to most people and they'll probably look back at you with some sense of disgust, a feeling which grows stronger when you try and explain that it's actually brilliant television. Yes, technically it's awful, but that doesn't stop it being bizarrely great.

The show is a strange relic of daytime TV. Back in the 1990s and early 2000s, chatshows like Kilroy, Trisha, The Jerry Springer Show and Ricki Lake were all the rage in Britain, but nowadays Kyle easily rules the roost. So much so in fact that no-one really bothers to try and emulate him.

Despite it sticking out like a sore thumb in between Lorraine and This Morning, the show regularly brings

Jeremy Kyle to host medical show The Emergency Room

Jeremy Kyle is to host a new daytime series on ITV.

The talk show host will discuss medical complaints with guests in his studio on The Emergency Room each afternoon.

The show has been described as a cross between The Jeremy Kyle Show and Channel 4's Embarrassing Bodies.

He will work alongside doctors and nurses in hospital wards who are treating patients with STIs, embarrassing rashes and other ailments.

Kyle's popular daytime show has become infamous for its daily use of lie detector and DNA tests.

ITV has sent a call out for people aged 16 or above to feature on the show.

Last year, the former radio DJ hosted ITV evening show The Kyle Files, which at one point saw him get pepper sprayed by a club bouncer.

DVD Review – Assassin (2015)

Assassin, 2015.

Directed by J.K. Amalou.

Starring Danny Dyer, Anouska Mond, Gary Kemp, Martin Kemp, Holly Weston and Eddie Webber.

Synopsis:

A hitman falls for a beautiful exotic dancer before discovering that his last hit was her dodgy businessman father, forcing him to turn against his ruthless employers to try and save her life.

Is it possible that Danny Dyer’s name could be used as rhyming slang for ‘tryer’? Because despite having a reputation as something of a numpty you can’t knock his ability for trying to be taken seriously, and in London-based gangster thriller Assassin he actually does a decent job.

Which is kind of odd as it wasn’t that long ago that Dyer himself said in the press that he wanted to take on different types of role, so starring in a gangland revenge movie with brothers Gary and Martin Kemp (The Krays) is hardly a

Jeremy Kyle Show pays £10k to straighten guest's wonky teeth

Did anyone ever wonder why Americans gave us Brits such a hard time for having bad teeth?

We certainly did, until that is we flicked on The Jeremy Kyle Show one morning and saw a dental disaster that made it all clear.

Gemma Swift appeared on the show earlier this year, but it wasn't her 'stop harassing me just because I'm sleeping with your ex' story that got viewers talking - it was her teeth.

ITV has now stumped up £10,000 to have them straightened, according to The Mirror.

The broadcaster also filmed the procedure, which will air on Thursday's (March 5) edition of The Jeremy Kyle Show.

The clip capturing the moment Jeremy Kyle was pepper-sprayed by a bouncer in Magaluf was recently unveiled.

The presenter was accosted while filming an episode of The Kyle Files last summer. Watch below:

Mel & Sue review: A nostalgic trip back to '90s telly

To call Mel & Sue a "brand new chat show" is a cheeky move from ITV.

It might be new in name, but that's just about it. We've seen the presenters, format and even guests in the new show, which aired for the first time today (January 12), all here before.

In the late '90s, Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins fronted Light Lunch on Channel 4. It featured cooking, celebrity guests (including Jennifer Saunders), questions from the studio audience and haphazard presenting.

Mel & Sue wasn't a million miles away. It was all about cooking, celebrity guests (including Jennifer Saunders), questions from the studio audience and haphazard presenting.

Commissioned on the back of their reinvigorated success from The Great British Bake Off, the fact they were revisiting old ground was something that wasn't lost on the pair.

As they discussed Celebrity Big Brother in their introduction, they quipped the Channel 5 show was

Jeremy Kyle discusses pepper-spray incident and admits to regular Botox

Jeremy Kyle has spoken about the moment he was pepper-sprayed in the face, and has also admitted to having regular Botox treatments.

The daytime host was in Magaluf in July last year when a bouncer sprayed him while he was filming a new TV series.

Speaking to The Sun, Kyle explained: "I was filming in Magaluf and the producers decided they needed a shot of me walking up the main strip.

"We turned the corner and it was a bit like being the Pied Piper. There must have been thousands of people chanting 'Jezza'... or 'w**ker!'

"Then all of a sudden I couldn't breathe, my eyes were streaming and my lungs were burning. I'd been pepper-sprayed by a bouncer.

"My security guard grabbed me and marched me through the shouting crowds to the van... it was the longest 100-yard walk of my life. I didn't even have time to feel frightened.

Jeremy Kyle Show investigated by Ofcom over uncensored 'f**k'

Ofcom is investigating an episode of The Jeremy Kyle Show for airing the word "f**k".

The pre-recorded show was broadcast on ITV earlier this month at 9.25am, while strong language is usually limited to a post-watershed slot after 9pm.

The morning show often features guests swearing, but they are usually bleeped out before being broadcast.

A spokesman for Ofcom said: "Ofcom is currently investigating the broadcast of offensive language before the watershed in an episode of The Jeremy Kyle Show, on ITV on November 4."

Meanwhile, Channel 5's Big Brother has been ruled in breach of Ofcom guidelines, after the word 'piss' was broadcast multiple times in the course of one conversation.

I'm a Celeb: Who slid down a snake... and climbed the career ladder?

Going into I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! is a dangerous business.

We're not talking about the poisonous spiders, bitey snakes or what might be lurking in the dunny.

No. When the frightened famous faces leap out of the plane and parachute into the jungle, they are taking their careers in their hands.

And while being on I'm a Celeb can revitalise a flagging career, it can also ruin it if you come out unfavourably during a campside spat or six.

Ahead of the show launching tonight, Digital Spy present our very own Snakes and Ladders. Who had a slippery slide down the public's favour? And who climbed the career ladder when they got to the other side of the rope bridge?

The Ladders

1. Katie Price (and Peter Andre)

Although Jordan was a relatively well-known glamour model pre-2004, not many people knew who Katie Price was when she
