10 films to beat the 2017 franchise fatigue

Mark Harrison Aug 1, 2017

Bored with massive films and special effects? Then here are 10 smaller movies well worth your consideration...

It's that time of year when we usually give you a list of films playing in cinemas during August, as the summer blockbuster season winds down, that will help cleanse your palate after all the tentpoles and sequels that have proliferated throughout the year so far. But to be honest, this summer has been so good to us, we're more refreshed than usual.

Even aside from originals like Edgar Wright's Baby Driver and Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk, this year's blockbusters have been of an unusually high standard. Wonder Woman pulled the Dceu out of its critical nosedive, War For The Planet Of The Apes is a gorgeous and emotional conclusion to the reboot trilogy, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming proved that Marvel's ever expanding continuity is still going strong.

Fargo Recap: Strangers on a Bus

Fargo Recap: Strangers on a Bus
Need to catch up? Check out our previous Fargo recap here.

The reverberations from last week’s Fargo fatality spread far and wide this week — and gave us our first tangible connection to previous seasons.

Nikki’s still waiting in that motel room, nursing her bruises with ice, unaware that Ray’s lying dead in a pool of blood. The cops knock down her door and haul her into the station, where Moe coldly drops a photo of Ray’s corpse in front on her. She’s stunned, but maintains her poker face (or maybe her bridge face?) while Moe

The Americans Bosses on the Finale's Tragic Twist, Season 5's Slow Burn and the Show's Ultimate Endgame

The Americans Bosses on the Finale's Tragic Twist, Season 5's Slow Burn and the Show's Ultimate Endgame
Warning: The following contains spoilers for Tuesday’s Season 5 finale of The Americans. Proceed with caution, comrades.

Just when Philip and Elizabeth think they’re out… the Center pulls them back in.

The Americans‘ Season 5 finale shattered the Russian spies’ dreams of returning to the motherland: Kimberly’s CIA dad got promoted to head of the Soviet division, making her an invaluable asset for Philip to hold onto, meaning the Jennings couldn’t abandon their post. Plus, Paige toughened up to the point where she could walk through that scary parking lot by herself at night, and Stan’s girlfriend

Performer of the Week: Ewan McGregor

Performer of the Week: Ewan McGregor
The Performer | Ewan McGregor

The Show | Fargo

The Episode | “The Lord of No Mercy” (May 24, 2017)

The Performance | Oh, brother. All season long on Fargo, McGregor has been pulling double duty as feuding Minnesota brothers Ray and Emmit Stussy. But in this week’s riveting potboiler of an episode, that duet tragically became a solo act.

Like Tatiana Maslany on Orphan Black, McGregor has so skillfully differentiated his two characters here — Emmit is the polite, genial big-business tycoon; Ray is the scruffy, embittered black sheep — that it’s easy to forget they’re played by the same actor. This week, McGregor

The 100 Review: In Case of Emergency, “Dnr”

The clock is ticking toward the second nuclear apocalypse, and all of our heroes (and villains) on The 100 are searching for ways to survive and cope with it. As the time winds down, different people have reached different conclusions about how they should approach the end of the world. The one thing that they all have in common, though, is that they’re compelling and exciting. It seems like The 100 maintains a high level of intensity at all times, but hey. I’m not mad about it. This week on The 100: The grounder clans battle over which clan gets to live in the bunker, so

'Guardians of the Galaxy 2': The Cute Sidekicks Who Paved the Way for Baby Groot

'Guardians of the Galaxy 2': The Cute Sidekicks Who Paved the Way for Baby Groot
The promotion for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has made one thing clear about the second outing for James Gunn's space superheroes: this time out, the cuteness factor has been upped considerably. As if a grouchy raccoon that sounds like Bradley Cooper wasn't enough, now fans get to see talking tree Groot turned into a little shrub, with anime eyes and high-pitched voice to boot.

The new and improved Groot is just the latest example of a long-standing tradition in science fiction movies: In case of emergency, wheel out the adorable sidekick. After all, no matter how dangerous things...

Ronda Rousey on 'SNL': 3 Sketches You Have to See

Ronda Rousey on 'SNL': 3 Sketches You Have to See
There are times in which it's fairly easy to predict ahead of time whether or not an episode of Saturday Night Live has the capacity to be either really good or really bad. But with Ronda Rousey, the predictive needle was all over the place. The potential equally existed for a surprising, breakout performance from the Mma star or a 90-minute trainwreck. There really was no way to know which one would unfold until the episode started.

Well, unfortunately, things primarily went the way of Door Number Two, with some

Wait! Whatc Sony Has Greenlit an Emoji Moviec

Sony Pictures Animation must certainly be enjoying how people are taking in the Pac-Man-heavy marketing for this weeks' Pixels (and, to the film's mild credit, he is the best part of it), because the suits in charge have ponied up the near seven figures to have some other yellow-faced friends transition to the big screen. In a heated three-studio audition, Sony won the right to have their banner placed in front of an Emoji movie. With Warner Bros and Paramount reported to be the other two studios vying to get the expressive, social media/text message-based personalities their cinematic due, it's apparently a ripe opportunity to take this property (c) to the next level, as the Japan-hatched ideograms don't subside themselves to any pesky rights, making them essentially free-reign when it comes to marketing, promoting and all that jazz. Does it matter that they'll have to take the extra route

Series finale review: 'Parks and Recreation' - 'One Last Ride': End of the line
And so "Parks and Recreation" has come to an end. We published many stories about the show over the last week, including an Amy Poehler interview, an essay on the show's greatness, and a whole lot more, and I have a review of the series finale coming up just as soon as you give me a pair of your gym socks... "Yes. I'm ready." -Leslie Knope A few years ago, Mike Schur and I had a very long discussion of finales — not only the many times he had written "Parks" episodes that could function as series finales if NBC canceled them, but of the many sitcom and drama finales he had admired over the years. He talked about how once upon a time, he was convinced that the show would end with the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the park Leslie built on Lot 48. He talked, as he so often does,

Exclusive Q&A with Alex and Theo from In Case Of Emergency Cabinets

  • DailyDead
Equipment to get your heart going again, put fires out, sterilize an open wound—those are the emergency items you usually see in sealed-off cabinets hanging in public places, but as helpful as defibrillators and first aid kits are in everyday life, you'd want more effective weapons at hand if a slavering werewolf from The Howling aimed its snout at your thigh, or if Fred Dekker's zombies from Night of the Creeps came calling for you as their delectable date.

That's where the fine folks from In Case Of come in. Their unique, hand-crafted, sealed emergency cabinets offer protection against zombies, vampires, werewolves, and demons. Though the weapons within their cabinets aren't real, they have a beautiful and realistic look that compliments the well-researched mythologies behind each item. To celebrate the hallowed day of horror that is Friday the 13th (and to give our readers a possible Friday the 13th

What if the zombies from George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead shambled through malls in real life?
