According to some, in the main event, "The British Bulldog" Davey Boy was originally supposed to win as agreed by the bookers and Vince McMahon, so Davey Boy could devote his win to his sister. However, the original ending of the match was changed to give Shawn Michaels a controversial win instead, to further the angle between Shawn and the Hart Family. Some Internet critics, and a bitter Bret "The Hitman" Hart, the brother-in-law of Davey Boy claim that Michaels used his backstage politics to veto the original ending of the match so that he would win and thus become the WWF's first wrestler to hold every major championship. This accusation added more fuel to Bret and Shawn's real-life feud, which would come full-circle two months later at Survivor Series (1997).
