Trivia

According to some, in the main event Davey Boy Smith, "The British Bulldog" was originally supposed to win as agreed by the bookers and Vince McMahon, so Smith could devote his win to his sister. However, the original ending of the match was changed to give Shawn Michaels a controversial win instead, to further the angle between Shawn Michaels and the Hart Family. Some Internet critics, and a bitter Bret Hart, the brother-in-law of Davey Boy claim that Michaels used his backstage clout to veto the original ending of the match so that he would win and thus become the WWF's first wrestler to hold every major championship. This accusation added more fuel to Bret Hart and Shawn Michael's real-life feud, which would come full-circle mere months later at Survivor Series '97.
