Based on a true story, this film tells the tale of the 1950 US soccer team who, against all odds, beat England 1 - 0 in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Although no US team has ever won a World Cup title, this story is about the family traditions and passions which shaped the lives of the players who made up this team of underdogs.

User Reviews

They should title it: "How NOT to make an anthology film".
11 July 2011 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

I usually love anthology films, we're supposed to get a certain mix of stories and characters at a glance -- enough to tease the audience, leaving you wanting more. I don't think I've ever wanted less out of a movie than this one right here. Six stories (each one no longer than 18 minutes apiece) that have nothing to do with each other in any way, shape or form. 18 minutes each was painful enough -- most of them dragged on after only 10. Let's break down the stories so you know what you're getting yourself into if you decide to rent this garbage:

Torte Bluma - Skarsgård and McBurney star as master and servant who have a very special friendship. Notting Hill Anxiety Festival - Julie Delpy deals with some issues with her psychiatrist, all about hopes, shattered dreams and red shoes. Ready - Imelda Staunton is a woman whose family has a curse, they don't live past 57 years of age, so she takes matters into her own hands. Spelling Bee - Anna Faris and Charlie Sheen serve as commentators for a very odd spelling bee championship. Easily the best of the bunch, but that's not saying much. Outskirts - Eva Mendes' car breaks down and she serves as a taxicab to the mechanic who is trying to help her. The Ingrate - Kathy Bates is a judge and a filmmaker who owes over $100,000 is pleading his case to discharge the amount.

I was expecting so much more from this than what was delivered. Maybe because the cast is nothing short of amazing. But these stories are terrible, short wastes of time. Almost nothing happens in each one to hold our attention or even goose us a little. If anything, they are very sad and/or very boring. 'Spelling Bee' is by far the best, it's humorous, it's bizarre and wonderfully playful with a usually boring topic -- so it surprised me to find a story like that amongst this mess.

I don't know how they got all the star power they did on this one, maybe because it was short work and an easy paycheck. It almost seems that they did it for a side job or a friend while they were vacationing in Europe or something, because most of the settings are foreign. There are no acting accolades or disapproval on this one, because the main problem lies within the stories themselves: they're just too damn boring. More reviews at
