The Notable Films of 2010: Part Six

27 December 2009 10:09 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Last Airbender

Opens: July 2nd 2010

Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel

Director: M. Night Shyamalan

Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.

Analysis: It has been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan, who started it as a household name with the label of a modern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".

Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of the hit »

Armond White At It Again: Hates on Multiple Award Winner Precious

5 November 2009 9:44 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Everyone's favourite contrarian [1] critic Armond White has once again made his presence felt this week, after delivering a scathing review of the Lee Daniels film Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire. The movie, which hits select theatres this weekend, is riding a massive wave of Oscar buzz after picking up awards at Sundance, Tiff and the San Sebastian Film Festival earlier this year. (Last year's People's Choice Award winner in Toronto was Best Picture winner Slumdog Millionaire.) Precious is currently sitting at 86% on Rotten Tomatoes [2], so of course White doesn't like it. However, the fact that he gives it a negative review isn't all that surprising -- it's what he says about it that will blow your mind. "The hype for Precious indicates a culture-wide willingness to accept particular ethnic stereotypes as a way of maintaining status quo film values. Excellent recent films with black themes—Next Day Air, »

A look at the Beyonce Knowles flick that is about to hit the HD market.

Apparently the only thing more furious than a woman scorned is a crazy women scorned. Such is the lesson we learn in 2009's Obsessed. The film concentrates on a young married couple. Derek Charles (Idris Elba) does well as a financial advisor, so he takes his wife Sharon (Beyonce Knowles) and son Kyle (Nathan and Nicolas Myers) to live in a nice new house.

All seems well in Derek's life, but matters start to unravel when he meets a temp named Lisa Sheridan (Ali Larter) at work. She quickly sets her sights on him and refuses to engage in the affair she desires. Unfortunately, Lisa refuses to take no for an answer; the more Derek resists, the greater her deluded attachment becomes.
