Vince Gerardis (“Game of Thrones”) and Matt Kennedy will executive produce. Zanne Devine and David Thwaites will oversee the  project for Miramax.

Ridley’s current projects include “Guerilla,” debuting on Showtime this Sunday; the ABC News documentary “Let It Fall” about the 1992 Los Angeles riots, also in theaters later this month; and the third season of ABC’s “American Crime,” on which he serves as showrunner and creator.

Ridley won the Academy Award for best adapted screenplay for “12 Years a Slave.” His other film credits include “Ben Hur, »

“Welcome to ‘American Crime.’”

That’s how showrunner John Ridley greeted actor Babou Ceesay on his first day on set. Which would have been fine — except that they were filming “Guerrilla,” the new six-episode limited series Ridley created, wrote, and directed for Showtime (premiering April 16).

Guerrilla” star Freida Pinto laughs at the memory, which became a running joke for her and her co-star, dismissing it as a rare slip for an otherwise intensely focused filmmaker. “He’s one of the few male multi-taskers who can give everything its due attention,” she says.

In fact, it had been quite a busy year for Ridley: While “Guerrilla” was under way in London, the third season of ABC’s “American Crime” was in production in Los Angeles. He was also juggling “Let It Fall,” a two-hour documentary about the 25th anniversary of the L.A. riots for ABC News (April 28), and a pilot, “Presence »

Shots Fired Review

22 March 2017 4:22 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

The first six episodes were provided prior to broadcast.

Broadcast television is divided between conformity and progression. Stations like CBS and NBC, for instance, largely refuse to move from comfortable original programming, without relevance or (for the most part) originality, while ABC and Fox go out of their way to challenge themselves by developing a social conscious. Shots Fired, Fox’s latest, most timely drama, is not comfortable TV. Instead, it’s urgent, thoughtful, political, poignant, intelligent and filled with relevancy and bleeding sincerity. If only it didn’t digress so readily into melodramatics and convoluted narratives. If there’s a show that desperately needs to ground itself squarely in reality, it’s most definitely this one.

Desperately hoping to discuss topical, serious-minded issues while still heavily catering to the juicy bombast of, say, Empire, Shots Fired is an interesting combination of pointed, pertinent television and sensationalized serialization. The result is, »

Interview: Actor David Oyelowo Presides Over ‘A United Kingdom’

4 March 2017 4:17 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Actor David Oyelowo is very familiar with portraying a man of consequence put into a difficult leadership role. In 2014, he took on the role of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in “Selma.” Currently, he is in theaters with “A United Kingdom,” which tells the story of an African prince who led his country to a new mindset in the 1950s.

Oyelowo portrays Seretse Khama, the first democratically elected president of the African country of Botswana. To get to that point, he first had to abdicate his right to ascend as king of the country, mostly because he had met and married a white British commoner (Rosamund Pike) while studying in England. Angering both his fellow countryman and the British government (who was the “protectorate” of Botswana), Khama used the exile as a strategy, and inspired his people through his call for acceptance of his situation and autonomy from colonization. »
