Pretty much meh slasher, nothing too exciting, 27 August 2008
Author: t-birkhead from United Kingdom

I just saw Heartstopper and I can't say I was particularly impressed, though I have seen worse. The plot is a standard Shocker type affair with a recently electrocuted heart ripping serial killer wanting to do a bit of soul transference. Its not new but its an OK peg to hang the predictable happenings on and the gore is fairly cool at times, plenty of hearts ripped out, blood splatter and whatnot, but there's only one particularly memorable moment of grue. The potential is definitely there, but this is seriously lacking in tension and scares. The killer, gamely played by James Brinkley, talks a lot and his cheesy prattle is kinda funny, but only in a very cheesy, please be quiet you're supposed to be a menacing killer not a daft satanic chatterbox kinda way. The first half hour or so is quite decent, with Robert Englund playing a rare good guy, all chatty and good natured and the killers first couple of appearances are kinda satisfying. But sadly Englund isn't one of the heroes and the two heroes are pretty lame. The girl is OK and certainly nice to look at but I found her companion irritating and neither of them get good lines. Also, the nurse that they hook up with is a total drag which is quite tedious. The writing is generally uninspired, often to the point of amusing badness, and the direction, by special effects wizard Bob Keen is perfunctory. Its just about watchable on account of its fast pace, grue and hospital setting (hospitals always make good horror locations) but ultimately is little more than a standard timewaster without likable enough characters or an interesting enough plot to work much. It certainly isn't the worst slasher out there and is a heck of a lot better than many of the recent straight to video horror outings but will appeal I suspect mostly to boozed up genre completists.
