This is the fifth in a multi-part series, The Year in Television 2011.
Tastes in television can of course be very subjective. One show may be your cup of tea, but not for the person sitting next to you. For instance, I love Louie, but my husband can’t stand it. I thought Torchwood: Miracle Day was a yawner, and yet the show seemed to have its vocal fans right here on AfterElton.
But where reasonable people can differ on any number of shows, the list below we can probably All agree on. These are the true TV stinkers of 2011. Now there probably were worse shows in 2011 than what appears on this list (H8R for instance), but all the projects appearing below added insult to injury: they might actually have been good. Our list includes the new shows that totally botched a decent concept... or squandered a good cast. And »
Peter Capaldi has been cast in series two of BBC period drama The Hour. The actor - who won a BAFTA last year for his role as foul-mouthed political spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in BBC Two comedy The Thick of It - will play eccentric head of news Randall Brown when the 1950s newsroom drama returns in 2012. Capaldi has also recently portrayed civil servant John Frobisher in Torchwood: Children of Earth and appeared in a supporting role as Frank Ryland in the first series of Jimmy McGovern's acclaimed courtroom drama Accused. He is currently playing Professor Marcus in a stage version of Ealing comedy The Ladykillers adapted by The It Crowd creator Graham Linehan. Romola Garai, Ben Whishaw and Dominic West (more) »

But Comic-Con came and went with no such news, although the idea resurfaced in November 2009 when the then Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies was asked about a film and said he would like to "give it a whirl."
Two years later, it's been revealed that Harry Potter director David Yates (pictured above) is about to start work on developing a Doctor Who movie with Jane Tranter, head of BBC Worldwide in Los Angeles.
Yates told Variety: "We're looking at writers now. We're going to spend two to three years to get it right. It needs quite »

Torchwood star John Barrowman has described the show's status as "in limbo". Starz CEO Chris Albrecht has indicated that the sci-fi drama might not return for another season, following the conclusion of the ten-part Miracle Day. "We've pushed the pause button now because we don't know what's happening," Barrowman told RTÉ Ten. "I would love to do a new series and I will play Captain Jack as long as they want me to play Captain Jack." However, he added: "It's in limbo at the moment and beyond my control." Barrowman also suggested that Torchwood could return as a feature film. "I think that Torchwood, (more) »

Torchwood star Eve Myles has insisted that she will not be involved in the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. The actress, who has appeared as Gwen Cooper in both shows, told The Independent that any further crossover seems unlikely. She explained: "We have lots of adult themes running in Torchwood and I think it would be inappropriate for us to have anything to do with Doctor Who because it's predominantly a family programme." Myles added that spinoff series Torchwood "deals with darker subjects" than its parent show. "If they want to do [a crossover], then fine but I can tell you that I'm not involved in it," she said. "They won't (more) »

Let's start the weekly round-up with Grimm.
Grimm's ratings dropped a little this week, but the show still won the 18-49 demo in its timeslot, finishing ahead of CSI: NY, Fringe and Supernatural, and rising by a full frakking ratings point (1.8) after Chuck (0.8). Wake up, Chuck.
Hitfix visited the set in Portland recently and posted a lengthy report. Here is a snippet:
Sasha Roiz on how his character will develop later in the series: "I’m not a Grimm descendent, but I'm a descendent of a long line that dates back just as Grimm does and we have a bit of a history and a past, so my line is a royal line and that will slowly unfold throughout the series."Collider has a longer interview with Sasha and Reggie Lee (more at the link):
It’s nice to see your character – like the main character – has the duality. »
John Barrowman, the star of the BBC/Starz series Torchwood, hasn't appeared on Doctor Who since his cameo appearance in "The End of Time," which saw the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) setting his character up with a potential new boyfriend, Alonso (Russell Tovey). While Captain Jack Harkness has returned since then as the lead in the fourth season of Torchwood, subtitled Miracle Day, he's been conspicuously absent from Matt Smith's tenure on Doctor Who. Strangely enough, though, it doesn't seem like Barrowman much wants to be with Smith's Doctor.
“Now if it was Doctor Who with David playing the Doctor – I’m going to get in trouble for saying this – I’d happily do a film with him," Barrowman told Rte.
While such a movie will probably never happen, it's interesting to note that Barrowman would apparently rather appear alongside Tennant (with whom he has appeared numerous times) than Matt Smith, »

Over the last few years, director Roland Emmerich has spoke a lot about a potential sequel (or two) to his 1996 box office hit, Independence Day. Back in early 2010 it was reported that Emmerich had signed on for two back-to-back sequels, and in late 2010 he was even dropping hints about the possible storyline saying, Will Smith‘s character may be the President of the United States in the sequels.
Emmerich said at the time,
“It’s an alternate reality kind of movie. We pick up the story, what would have happened after this kind of attack? Naturally, the alien technology has changed everything.”
Did they rebuild the White House? Who will be president?
“Or, who will be president? Who Will be president? See?”
Now it seems Will may not even be a part of the sequels. NYMag reports that Will Smith has reportedly asked 20th Century Fox for $50 million to star in the sequels, »
