Storyline

Mind the Gap begins with an angry student crowd protesting in front of a building. A radio news bulletin tells us that these are students - attempting to gain access to a board meeting which they believe will decide future fee structure at the university. An immaculately dressed woman - on her way to the meeting - threads her way through the throng and enters the building foyer. She goes to take the stairs but is prevented from doing so: a cleaning lady blocks her path, with a sign that says - 'STAIRS CLOSED FOR CLEANING: PLEASE USE LIFT". After an agitated conversation with the cleaning lady, the woman resolves, against her wishes, to take the lift. A girl is inside when the lift arrives. The woman hesitates - naturally, considering the commotion outside - but composes herself and enters. After a several moments, the lift breaks down. The woman, who is claustrophobic, has a panic attack. The girl, surprisingly, manages to calm her, and the two begin to talk. The woman confesses her ... Written by Rachel Givney

Trivia

While the bulk of the film takes place in an elevator, no scenes were actually shot in a real lift. The entire sequence was shot on a sound stage in a set which was hand built by the film's production designer, Colin Gibson. See more »

awesome

a VERY clever and entertaining short film from an up and coming young film director. Well worth my time. I saw this at the Sydney Film Festival in the Contemporary World Movies section and was pleasantly surprised. I have heard that it has also been shown on the ABC, which is a good sign that Aunty still can recognise talent and support emerging young filmmakers. Solid acting performances from Kerry Armstrong and Alyssa McLelland. Clever storyline. I struggled to find fault with this 15 minute short. Givney looks to be a promising young director. Ill be interested to see her further projects in the future. I give it 10 out of ten
