Beautifully filmed piece with a touch of humour
5 December 2005 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

A simple idea, artistically executed.

The story is so basic in itself that you don't get the usual feeling with shorts films that it is trying too hard to impress, and maintains a subtle charm. Fans of the Coen Brothers may appreciate the very dry humour at times which helps the film sustain momentum at times when the story could have stuttered.

What I liked most was the way the film was directed. There really are some stunning shots in the film that are extremely eye-catching and the black and white feel adds to the experience. Possibly the best example of this is the scene where Nick Moran sees a pistachio nut under the bed, and the camera cuts to an angle directly behind the nut looking up at the room; a very good piece of camera work.

What's unfortunate however is that the only thing that stops me rating this film as a 10 is the camera work in other scenes. On some of the close ups the film is noticeably blurry, and really takes the shine off an otherwise great film.

Nick Moran is superb in the film, and keeps the watchers attention throughout despite being the only main character. What could have actually made the film slightly better would have if he had in fact been the ONLY on screen character, as the introduction of the 'nut dealer' onto the screen did not add anything by way of interest.

Overall I thought this was a great film, and I look forward to seeing more from this director in the years ahead.
