The film's script consisted of only a 17-page storyline and the majority of acting was improvised around the plot to deliver a certain level of authenticity and youthful awkwardness.

Spontaneous and authentic coming of age film

Coming of age film set in a dusty desert town in Patagonia featuring a 15 yo boy, Lucas (Nahuel Pérez Biscayart!) dealing with sexual feelings; separated parents; and life. A well traveled road for sure so what makes this any different? Director Santos has attempted to literally give us a "slice of life", the term from the 60s used to describe British films of film of the lower social class. As a result there is no real beginning or end, no plot for plot lovers, or denouement. There was no dialogue scripted and the scenes were improvised to a large degree with the young actors, not beginners but older players with training and some experience that looked younger. The director gave the 3 lead players tape recorders to record their feelings about certain subjects, like a confessional as the director said, and these were used in the film. The film reminded me of La Commare secca with its long central section of ordinary people doing ordinary things. I feel certain that Gummo must have been a big influence as well. The result is a dream-scape of remembrance-ours as well as the director.. Lucas's ambivalence concerning his sexuality creates an undercurrent of tension that is not resolved. Director Santos was asked in an interview if a gay subtext existed but the response seemed deliberately muddled but suggested a generation that has discarded sexual labels. I saw it as depicting that time in a boy's life when the strong affectionate feeling for another boy gives way to fascination with girls, but that might be too obvious. I think the film achieved its goal of a feeling of spontaneity and authenticity but was overlong at 110 min. The usual 90 would have been better.
