James Garner Died at His Home at 86
James Garner passed away at his home in Los Angeles on July 19.

Actor James Garner known for his roles in The Rockford Files and Maverick has died at the age of 86.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded at about 7:57 pm last night to an unspecified medical request at his address. West Lapd has confirmed they responded and after their investigation, it appears he died of natural causes.

Garner received an Emmy nomination for best actor in Maverick in 1959, and he won an Emmy for his role as Private Investigator Jim Rockford in The Rockford Files in 1977.

Garner was not just known for his roles in television as he was able to transition from television to film. R.I.P. James Garner

R.I.P. James Garner
James Garner died last night at the age of 86. The ruggedly handsome actor will be remembered always for the 1950s TV Western Maverick and for playing Jim Rockford in the 1970s series The Rockford Files. No cause of death was given but he had suffered from a stroke in 2008 after open-heart surgery. A war hero before he turned to acting, Garner received two Purple Hearts while serving in the Korean War. Garner’s last screen appearance came in 2006′s The Ultimate Gift, but his last major role in a studio film came opposite Gena Rowlands in the love story The […]

Forecast: 'Divergent' Leaps Into Theaters -- Will It Be the Next Ya Hit?

Forecast: 'Divergent' Leaps Into Theaters -- Will It Be the Next Ya Hit?
Thursday Update: Divergent earned an estimated $4.9 million from late Thursday shows. In comparison, the first Twilight opened to $7 million at midnight in November 2008. If Divergent follows an identical pattern, it will wind up close to $50 million for the three-day weekend.Forecast: Young-adult adaptation Divergent, which is being positioned as the successor to Twilight and The Hunger Games, should easily take first place at the box office this weekend. Meanwhile, Muppets Most Wanted also opens, though with a bit less fanfare than its predecessor.Opening at 3,936 theaters, Divergent is the latest in a long line of young-adult adaptations aimed at the young female audience that turned out in droves for the Hunger Games and Twilight franchises. Unfortunately, other recent attempts have been less-than-impressive: in the past 14 months alone, Beautiful Creatures, The Host, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and Vampire Academy all bombed. No question about it, Divergent is in a league above those movies.

"The Ultimate Life" is Ultimately Unnecessary

The market for values-affirming, family-friendly feature films has expanded by leaps and bounds in the last decade, but the quality of the productions made to meet that demand has yet to catch up with the surge in quantity. As a result, we get films like The Ultimate Life, the sequel to The Ultimate Gift, which is completely harmless but also painfully clichéd and devoid of any meaningful point. Instead, it’s the sloppy derivative morality tale of a cheap Hallmark or Lifetime movie gussied up with a bigger budget that still tells the same lazy story with the same tired lesson. Did a man really need to read a biography of his grandfather’s life to learn that he should prioritize things like love over money? Especially since he already seemed well aware of that concept but was simply hamstrung by circumstance? Which means all The Ultimate Life really accomplishes

Riddick

Distributor: Universal

Having been left for dead in more ways than one after the critical and commercial failure of 2004’s “The Chronicles of Riddick,” Vin Diesel’s futuristic fugitive Richard B. Riddick gets his lean, mean, R-rated mojo back for “Riddick,” an improbable but very enjoyable sequel that recaptures much of the stripped-down intensity of Diesel and director David Twohy’s franchise starter “Pitch Black” (while treating “Chronicles” like the dream season of “Dallas”). Once again pitting Diesel’s eponymous anti-hero against human and alien adversaries on a rugged desert planet, this exuberantly gory chase pic won’t orbit the same box office galaxy as the star’s “Fast & Furious” series, but will have no trouble recouping its reported $38 million budget (one-third the cost of “Chronicles”).

Film Review: ‘The Ultimate Life’

Film Review: ‘The Ultimate Life’
Both a prequel and a sequel to 2007′s inspirational theatrical bomb (but DVD hit) “The Ultimate Gift,” “The Ultimate Life” once again soft-pedals gentle messages of Christian charity and family values destined to appeal strictly to the converted. Frequent faith-based filmmaker Michael Landon Jr. displays great determination, and even more folly, in his attempt to mount a “Giant”-sized family saga with the production values of “Sharknado.” Terminally dull result faces grim theatrical prospects on its way to endless Hallmark Channel reruns, where it will challenge even the most forgiving viewers to stay awake and alert throughout.

Picking up three years after the events of “Gift,” busy young mogul Jason Stevens (Logan Bartholomew, taking over for Drew Fuller) has hit a rough patch with g.f. Alexia (Ali Hillis), and only a thorough reading of the journals of his deceased billionaire grandfather, Red (James Garner, onscreen for less than a minute), can set him straight.

FilmDistrict launching High Top Releasing for Indies

Moving into the indie sphere, FilmDistrict has launched High Top Releasing to provide theatrical booking services to independent producers.

The label, a subsidiary under FilmDistrict, will provide “distribution-for-hire services.” Those include sales, in-theater marketing, rental negotiation and collections for producers who can provide their own prints-and-advertising and marketing.

High Top releases will not be counted as part of FilmDistrict’s box office revenue share.

First High Top titles will be “I’m in Love With a Church Girl” (pictured) and “The Ultimate Life.”

“Girl,” to be released in association with Mission Pictures Releasing, stars Ja Rule, alongside Adrienne Bailon and Michael Madsen. “Life,” the sequel to “The Ultimate Gift,” stars Peter Fonda, Logan Bartholomew, Bill Cobbs, Lee Meriwether and Ali Hillis.

“The FilmDistrict business plan, which calls for the release of six to nine films a year, leaves us capable of providing additional theatrical distribution services,” said Peter Schlessel, FilmDistrict’s CEO.
