How Horror Movie The Strangers Is - and Isn't - Based on a "True Story"

21 September 2017 4:20 PM, PDT | POPSUGAR | See recent BuzzSugar news »

The 2018 horror movie slate is already building up quite the repertoire. In addition to a fourth Insidious film and an epic Halloween reboot, we're also getting a sequel to 2008's The Strangers. In this next installment, The Strangers 2, another evil trio torments a family in a trailer park. As far as we can tell, it's not based on a true story. Which, actually, brings us back to one of the most contentious facts about the original film. Did you think The Strangers actually happened in real life? After all, the original teaser trailer posited that it was "inspired by true events." Well, we've got some news for you. In 2008, The Strangers, one of the most unsettling movies ever, hit theaters. It wasn't so much that the film, starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, boasted a unique concept; it's your typical, bloody home invasion film. And though it's a decent horror film, »

American Horror Story Fans Can't Stop Comparing Season 7 to This Horror Movie

11 September 2017 9:15 AM, PDT | POPSUGAR | See recent BuzzSugar news »

Image Source: FX American Horror Story just started its seventh season, Cult, and it's wasted no time in scaring the living sh*t out of everyone watching. Killer clowns? Bloody crumpets? Trypophobia? Donald Trump winning the election all over again? Just thinking about the premiere makes us feel sick to our stomachs. While the show is clearly terrifying all on its own, it's hard not to notice some thematic similarities to past horror movies. In addition to season seven's Rosemary's Baby vibes and the connections to Karyn Kusama's The Invitation, the murderous, masked clowns in Cult bear a startling resemblance to the 2008 thriller The Strangers. The film, which is reportedly based on a true story, stars Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as a couple terrorized by three violent assailants in their isolated vacation home. The masks the home invaders wear aren't overtly clown-ish, but they're still pretty horrific. RelatedThis »

Frightfest 2017: Jackals Review: Dir. Kevin Greutert

29 August 2017 12:25 PM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Jackals Review: A cult de-programming goes horribly wrong in eighties-set home invasion thriller, Jackals. Jackals Review

An estranged family reunite in their cabin in the woods. They are meeting for a very special reason, to rescue their youngest son from the clutches of a cult. They’ve hired ex-soldier Jimmy (Stephen Dorff), a man with experience with cults, to perform de-programming, but all must be on hand to provide moral support. It soon becomes clear that the family all have different views about the treatment, but they quickly have to put their feelings aside as the cult wants him back, and they’re willing to do anything to get him.

Kevin Greutert is best know for directing Saw VI and Saw VII. With that knowledge in mind one might expect that Jackals would be full to the brim with blood and body parts, but it isn’t. There are of »

Frightfest 2017: ‘Jackals’ Review

27 August 2017 3:31 AM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Stars: Stephen Dorff, Deborah Kara Unger, Jonathon Schaech, Nick Roux, Chelsea Ricketts | Written by Jared Rivet | Directed by Kevin Greutert

They knew it would take steely resolve and iron daring to go up against the violent sect who have brainwashed their teenage son, Justin. But the estranged Powell family and the cult deprogrammer they’ve hired in desperation had no idea how soon they would become the bloody prey in this suspense shocker, which is apparently based on a true 1980s story…

A riff on the Assault on Precinct 13 template of a building under siege, Kevin Greutert and co. try to bring something new to the all-too-familiar story, giving Jackals an extra depth with the cult deprogrammer angle. However the idea of a cult going to such lengths to retrieve a lost member basically seems like a throwaway storyline: an excuse for the “bad men” to attack our protagonists, »

Once You Enter the Cult You Can Never Leave in this Preview for Jackals

7 July 2017 8:01 AM, PDT | 28 Days Later Analysis | See recent 28 Days Later Analysis news »

Kevin Greutert (The Strangers) and Jared Rivet are the filmmakers behind the horror film Jackals. This title, slated for a September, release involves a cult and a young boy. Both the family and the cult vie for him. And, Jackals is reminiscent of Adam Wingard's You're Next, in costume and setting. As well, Jackals stars: Jonathon Schaech, Deborah Kara Unger and Stephen Dorff. The film's first trailer and poster are hosted here. The poster for the film was developed from an early still. The still and graphic show frozen characters, masked in fog. That axe is not for chopping wood. And, the tagline: "sacrifices must be made" reminds viewers of the blood to be spilled. Director Greutert also helmed Saw: The Final Chapter. Jackals is slated for a September 1st release. This title will show through Video-on-demand and in theatres, on this date. And, you can join the cult then, »

The Strangers 2 Will Have A Road Element To It

19 June 2017 5:44 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Ten years is a lifetime in the film industry.

To put that into perspective, the Marvel Cinematic Universe was viewed as little more than wishful thinking back in 2007, when Jon Favreau and the Powers That Be quietly began plotting an Iron Man post-credits scene involving a certain Nick Fury. Twelve months later, Favreau’s standalone pic launched Robert Downey Jr.’s career into the stratosphere and the rest is history. But 2008 also witnessed the release of a lesser-known horror pic. Its name? The Strangers.

Headed up by Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, the home invasion thriller became something of a cult hit nine years ago and now, after enduring a prolonged spell in pre-production, The Strangers 2 is officially on the cards. It’s found its leading trio, too, now that former Mad Men star Christina Hendricks, Bailee Madison, and Lewis Pullman have all climbed aboard to anchor the horror sequel. »

Image Nation Abu Dhabi pacts with producers Roy Lee, Steven Schneider

16 May 2017 11:33 AM, PDT | ScreenDaily | See recent ScreenDaily news »

Three-year production deal aims for one genre film a year.

Image Nation Abu Dhabi has struck a production deal with veteran producers Roy Lee and Steven Schneider on a slate of high-concept, modestly- budgeted English-language genre films.

The goal is for the projects to demonstrate broad international appeal and franchise potential and make at least one film a year that Image Nation will fully finance. The parties declined to reveal titles.

The deal reunites Schneider with Image Nation after their recent collaboration on Ali F. Mostafa’s dystopian thriller The Worthy, set to debut worldwide this month on Netflix after it became the streaming service’s first acquisition in the UAE.Schneider produced with Peter Safran and Rami Yasin.

Lee and Schneider helped launch genre franchises including The Ring, Paranormal Activity, Insidious and The Grudge.

Besides The Worthy, Image Nation’s regional genre credits encompass Djinn, Majid Al Ansari’s debut feature Rattle The Cage (Zinzana).

'The Strangers 2' Lures In Christina Hendricks To Star

12 May 2017 3:30 PM, PDT | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

A sequel to The Strangers has been a long time coming. The indie horror, movie starring Liv Tyler as a poor woman who just happened to be home when three masked maniacs felt like cutting loose, was a hit back in 2008, freaking out tons of people both in theaters and at home. Not only was it successful, but it also had a simple, tried and true premise that could easily be replicated for sequels. Those sequels never materialized, though. News of a The Strangers 2 has come and gone over the years. 2016 seemed like the year it would finally happen, but nope. Now, though, it's finally coming together. And thankfully it's with some promising names in front of and behind the camera. Deadline reports that Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), Bailee Madison (Once Upon a Time), and...

Strangers 2 Gets Mad Men Star Christina Hendricks in the Lead

12 May 2017 12:22 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

After nearly a decade, it looks like The Strangers 2 is finally coming together. The long-awaited sequel is set to shoot later this month and, as further proof that the movie is actually happening this time, three cast members have been added. Bailee Madison (Once Upon a Time) and Lewis Pullman (Aftermath) have joined the cast, but, most importantly, Emmy-nominated actress and former Mad Men star Christina Hendricks has signed on to play the lead in The Strangers 2.

According to Deadline, the trio of actors have officially signed on for The Strangers 2, which will be getting underway very shortly. Filming is set to begin on May 30, but there is no word yet on an official release date. Since this is going to be a relatively low-budget horror-thriller, the shoot probably won't be all that long and, depending on how long post-production takes, we could be seeing the movie in theaters fairly soon. »

The Strangers 2 Producer Reveals Details Of The Long Awaited Sequel

12 April 2017 10:48 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Home invasion tales are a well-worn narrative in the horror movie genre – but every once in a while, a film comes along that gives that tired scenario a shot in the arm. 2008’s The Strangers was one such project, with its story of relationship discord playing out as background to a terrifying encounter with masked intruders. A sequel has been in the works for a number of years, but is finally picking up momentum – as The Strangers 2 – with director Johannes Roberts at the helm.

The Strangers was notable for the way in which it specifically sought to leave the motivations of the attackers a mystery. Focusing on the perspective of the victims, the film was anchored by the idea that the target couple (played by Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman) would have no idea why they were being terrorised, and so the audience doesn’t either. Until now, The Strangers 2 »

Deadly Dialogue: A Conversation on Cinema with Filmmaker Bryan Bertino

4 April 2017 5:10 PM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

Hello, readers! Welcome back for another installment of one our featured columns here at Daily Dead, Deadly Dialogue: A Conversation on Cinema, in which we catch up with notable folks—both in front of and behind the camera—from the horror and sci-fi genres to discuss the films that inspired them to become the artists they are today.

With the release of The Blackcoat’s Daughter from A24, we thought it was the perfect time to chat with filmmaker Bryan Bertino, who, in addition to directing The Strangers, Mockingbird, and The Monster, was a producer on The Blackcoat’s Daughter as well. Here’s what Bertino had to say when we discussed what inspired his decision to pursue a career in Hollywood.

Honestly, I always knew I wanted to be in the movies. When I was about 18 or 19, the only thing that I knew was that I had a passion for movies. »

Interview: Bryan Bertino on The Blackcoat’S Daughter, The Monster, and The Strangers

While it’s been available since last month on DirecTV exclusively, A24 and DirecTV will release The Blackcoat’s Daughter in theaters and On Demand March 31st, 2017. Osgood Perkin’s stunning feature film stars Kiernan Shipka, Emma Roberts, Lucy Boynton, and James Remar, and it explores demonic possession and the tragedy that follows such a horrific presence.

Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with one of the producers for The Blackcoat’s Daughter, Bryan Bertino, who is no stranger (pun intended) to the world of modern horror. In 2008, Bertino’s directorial debut, The Strangers became a breakout success, taking in over $80 million worldwide and helping to launch his career as both a filmmaker and a producer.

During the interview, Bertino discussed working with Perkins on The Blackcoat’s Daughter, the struggles they faced throughout the four-year process of getting the project made, and how the initial script jumped »
