Warner's Future Is Wild

2 October 2009 12:08 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Warner Bros is making a film version of The Future Is Wild, the documentary series and future-imagineering project that consulted scientists and then animated what the far future might look like. For those of you keeping score at home, that makes this the second evolution-linked project of the day.The Future is Wild project includes a successful cartoon / live-action series, books, comics, theme park rides and animatronic exhibits that have travelled around the world, looking at what the Earth might look like (with or without us, and assuming we don't manage to pollute everything) in 5 million, 100 million or 200 million years. That little dude in the picture here is Rufus the Reef Glider, who might be around in 100 million years. The deal was struck between the studio, producer John H. Williams' Vanguard Films (currently working on Space Chimps 2, god help us) and series creator John Adams (no, not that one »

Weekend Report: 'Funny People' More Pauper Than King of Comedy

3 August 2009 2:34 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

If this weekend's box office were a comedian, it might have been heckled off the stage, mostly for its dullness. Between the main new release, Funny People, which always had sketchy prospects despite high profile talent, and the cumulative effect of a relatively soft July slate, overall business amounted to $127.6 million, which was off 17 percent from the same weekend last year and low for the time of the year. What's more, the summer as a whole became on par with last summer through the same point, dwindling from the lead it had racked up in May and June. Headlining the weak weekend, Funny People drew $22.7 million on approximately 4,100 screens at 3,007 sites, which was significantly less than director Judd Apatow's previous picture, Knocked Up, and even behind his first, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, in terms of attendance. By lead actor Adam Sandler's standards, the debut was poor for one of his comedies, »

Michael Jackson: the Post-Racial King of Pop.

8 July 2009 2:17 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

I am sitting in a movie theater with my two children to watch Space Chimps, an animated children's movie about chimpanzees who travel through space, through a wormhole to an alien planet, and then back to the Earth safely. The human controllers on the ground sport all the telltale signs of the super-geek: foreign accents, pocket protectors, glasses, etc. etc. And then there came a very funny moment. The chimps started to play the techno version of Axel F from Beverly Hills Cops, and the uber-geek with glasses, a pocket protector, and the foreign accent (vaguely Indian) broke out in a dance. All the telltale Michael Jackson moves. The moonwalk, the waves of his arms. Wow. And I see my children grooving to the music, attempting the dance moves first with their »

Review: Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs

1 July 2009 11:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Pixar and everything else - them's the breaks when it comes to judging computer-animated fare these days. Although Pixar has rightfully earned themselves the lead among studios, and by a significant margin, it's all too easy to then marginalize the performance of others.

DreamWorks has certainly raised their game beyond pure pop-culture recitation with the inventive and entertaining likes of Over the Hedge, Kung Fu Panda, and Monsters vs. Aliens (and Aardman or no, I'd even include the winning Flushed Away among their finer efforts). For every Open Season, Sony has given us a Monster House (okay, so that's just one-for-one at the moment). And every time that Fox bequeaths to unwilling audiences something like Space Chimps or Everyone's Hero, Blue Sky has nothing to do with it.

Fox/Blue Sky, however, is the precise pairing that gives us the visually engaging and moderately amusing outings like Robots, Horton Hears a Who! »

Trailer: They Came From Upstairs

9 April 2009 8:29 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Yesterday we debuted the first images from They Came From Upstairs, the kid-friendly alien invasion comedy starring High School Musical's Ashley Tisdale. Now MTV Movies Blog has debuted the trailer, and we've got it embedded below. The tone seems somewhat along the lines of the live-action Saturday morning shows ABC used to run when I was a kid, with lots of pratfalls and clever kids and adventure stories. But hey, those entertained me plenty back then. This will surely be one of those summer movies that whole busloads of daycampers go to see but grown-ups don't touch. So long as it's not as bad as Space Chimps, that's fine by me. Movie Trailers - Movies Blog »

The 2009 Razzie Awards -- It's official! Paris Hilton is the Kate Winslet of crap

23 February 2009 | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

There was a moment during last night's Oscar telethon when the producers seemed to lose sight of the fact that they were there to honor "The Best" of 2008. Maybe it was the clip from "Space Chimps" that tipped their hand, or maybe it was the ridiculous amount of screen-time given over to the kids from "High School Musical". No matter. The point is that, especially during those film-clip sequences, it was pretty difficult to tell that you were watching the Oscars as opposed to the Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Awards… or even the Razzies. Formally known as The Golden Raspberry Awards, the Razzies set the low bar in terms of the year's cinematic achievement. For the 29th consecutive year, the 2008 Razzies were handed out the day before the Oscars - just to remind you that for every "Slumdog" there are at least three movies form Uwe Boll. »

[DVD Review] Fly Me To The Moon

19 February 2009 8:24 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

If there’s a lesson to be learned from Fly Me To The Moon, it’s this: unless you have a budget of 100 million dollars or more to work with, stay the hell out of the digital animation business. You’re running up against two especially well-funded studios (Pixar and Dreamworks) and an audience long since numbed to the novelty of computer animation. The talent is something, but if you haven’t got the money shots, then you’d better pack up and go home.

Which, you can only conclude, is exactly what the producers of Fly Me To The Moon should have done. While it might have been possible to endure the boring characters, terrible jokes, and cultural worldview that was already retrograde by the time the film was set (1969), going along with its uniquely and singularly uninvolved visual look is too much to ask.

The plot is basically described by the title, »

Will Oscars think Cas nominees sound familiar?

8 January 2009 2:55 PM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

Perennial Oscar nominee Kevin O'Connell failed to make the cut when the Cinema Audio Society announced nominations for the best sound mixing this year, perhaps because his two 2008 films -- "The Ruins" and "Space Chimps" -- were less than successful at the box office. Last year, he picked up nod No. 12 from the Cas and his 20th Oscar nomination for "Transformers," but lost both bids and remains winless with both kudos. Count on several of this year's Cas nominees -- "The Dark Knight," "Iron Man," "Quantum of Solace," "Slumdog Millionaire," and "Wall-e" -- to make it into the final five when Oscar nominations are announced Jan. 22. Over the last 15 years, the »

Trailer - Next Summer's 'Space Chimps': Disney's 'G-Force'

31 December 2008 9:16 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

What's the deal with Disney and caged rodents? It all began with Bolt, where the best character was the hamster named Rhino. And this past weekend, Bedtime Stories tried incredibly hard to get comedic milage out of a bug-eyed guinea pig and it didn't work, and next summer, Disney's devoting an entire freakin' movie to guinea pigs with the new Jerry Bruckheimer kids' flick, G-Force.

If you were just reading the cast list, you might think it's moving in the right direction. I dig Will Arnett, Sam Rockwell, and Bill Nighy, and have no enmity toward Penélope Cruz or Tracy Morgan. Nic Cage is definitely evaluated on a case-by-case basis. So that's fine. But, ooh, this trailer. I can only hope this wasn't really what they were shooting for.

Trailer courtesy of Movie Web

Maybe more trailers will help, but are we willing to sit through them? This is a tough first impression to overcome, »
