Guillermo del Toro was offered the chance to direct, but turned it down to work on Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008).
While in preparation for the film, director Eric Valette never watched the original Japanese version One Missed Call (2003), and asked the actors not to watch it either.

Out of 79 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, none of of them have been positive resulting in an abysmal 0% rating as of 2015. Rotten Tomatoes awarded the film the Mouldy Tomato award for the worst reviewed film of 2008 as a result.

Jason Horgan was originally considered for the part of Ray Purvis, but the producers felt that he was too young. The part went to Jason Beghe, and Horgan was cast as Dr. Ken Brown.

Sound designers used the voice of Skid Row front man Sebastian Bach in the hospital basement sequence. The archive audio came from Bach's scream at the beginning of "Midnight Tornado", a song from the band's 1989 debut album, Skid Row.
