George Carlin – who once wryly wondered, "Why do they lock gas station bathrooms? Are they afraid someone will clean them?" – is being mourned by fellow comedians such as Ben Stiller and Jay Leno, not only for being a groundbreaker in entertainment but an individual of great honor. "George Carlin was a hugely influential force in stand-up comedy," Stiller, 42, said in a statement. "He had an amazing mind, and his humor was brave, and always challenging us to look at ourselves and question our belief systems, while being incredibly entertaining. He was one of the greats and he will be missed.

Latest: Katherine Heigl has upset staff on the set of Grey's Anatomy after withdrawing from the Emmy awards as part of a protest about her character's development on the hit show.
The actress insisted her name be left off the official ballot because she felt her character was awful during the most recent season of the medical drama.
But the move has disgruntled workers on the programme.
A source tells America's Entertainment Weekly, "The show bent over backwards to accommodate her film schedule, and then she criticises the show for lack of material?
"It's an ungrateful slap in the face to the very writers responsible for her Emmy win in the first place."
Heigl won the Best Supporting Actress prize at the Emmys last year. She has since established herself as a movie star with roles in Knocked Up and 27 Dresses.

Katherine Heigl has signed on to star in the big-screen adaptation of Carolyn Jessop’s memoir “Escape,” according to Variety.
In her book, Jessop recounts her childhood in the polygamist sect of the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints. At the age of 18, she was forced into a marriage with a 50-year-old man; at age 35, she fled with her eight children.
Jessop is also known for testifying against polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs.
Heigl rose to fame after starring opposite Seth Rogen in Judd Apatow’s “Knocked Up.” She recently starred in Anne Fletcher’s romantic comedy “27 Dresses” and will next be seen in Robert Luketic’s “The Ugly Truth.”
I have to admit I always look forward to seeing Katherine Heigl on the screen. There’s just something about her that makes her an utterly likeable actress. She even managed to pull off a charming performance in the weak “27 Dresses.

Grey's Anatomy star Katherine Heigl was shocked to find out her co-star and friend T. R. Knight was gay - because she had spent the show's pilot flirting with him.
The Knocked Up beauty was single when shooting began on the hit U.S. show - and 35-year-old hunk Knight caught her eye.
But the actress' romantic plans didn't make result in any romantic liaisons - because her lustful looks were ignored as Knight is gay.
She says, "When we were filming the pilot I was single and so was he and I kind of had my eye on him. I was getting nowhere and I was super-confused.
"I was like, 'Hello? Do I have something hanging out of my nose? Why aren't you paying any attention to me? Needless to say, it quickly became a friendship once he told me."

Knocked Up star Katherine Heigl has formed a production company with her mother - just in case her acting career fails.
The 29-year-old aims to become a movie producer when she is no longer offered high profile film roles, and has set up Abishag Productions with her mum Nancy so she has a job to fall back on.
And Heigl is confident her shrewd business move will pay off.
She says, "I would like to have Meryl Streep's career and keep working for the rest of my life - but that isn't always the case.
"It's different for women in this industry. If I have another 10 to 15 years left, I'll be lucky. Then I hope I can still produce. I would love to do that.
"Which is why my mother and I have set up our own production company."

Actress Katherine Heigl has hit back at critics who have hailed her as the next Julia Roberts, insisting the comparison is "insulting" to the Pretty Woman star.
Heigl found fame starring in TV medical drama Grey's Anatomy, but has since found Hollywood success in movies like 2007's Knocked Up.
Her film outings have been well-received and critics have been quick to compare her to Roberts, who also starred in a number of romantic comedies throughout her career.
But 29-year-old Heigl insists she is not out to copy anyone else's acting style.
She says, "I can't help but feel that's (the comparison) is a little insulting to Julia Roberts. There's not another woman who I look at and think, 'That's it, that's whose career I want to have.'
"I'm just me and trying to do the best I can in every decision in any given moment."

Knocked Up star Katherine Heigl has dismissed reports she is to quit Grey's Anatomy, insisting her Hollywood career comes second to her role in the hit TV show.
The 29-year-old made her big-screen breakthrough in Judd Apatow's 2007 romantic comedy and has since been hailed by critics as the next Julia Roberts.
It had been feared Heigl would abandon the medical drama in order to take advantage of her considerable film success, but she insists she's looking forward to returning to her TV role as Dr. Isobel Stevens and won't be leaving just yet.
She says, "When I come back to Grey's, I am actually really excited. After nine months a year for four years, of course you're going to think, 'I want to be someone else for a while.'
"I landed really good things and I did them in my breaks. It broke up the monotony of the character and I'm very, very grateful for opportunities. But Grey's is such a good cast. Everybody is amazing."

Knocked Up star Jason Segel was once humiliated in front of an ex-girlfriend - by a dominatrix.
The TV star, who plays an unlucky ex who winds up holidaying with his former girlfriend and her rock star beau in new film Forgetting Sarah Marshall, was left crushed when a theatre date turned into a disaster.
Recalling the unfortunate incident, Segel says, "One night I'm at this little black box theatre, I'm wearing a suit and, as the lights go down, in walks this ex of mine with her new boyfriend.
"I started to feel hot and uncomfortable but then it dawned on me, 'Hey kid, you're wearing a suit. You can handle this.'
"Knocked Up had just come out and I was doing really well. I thought, 'She's gonna really regret it when she sees you buddy.'
"Then the play begins and this woman walks out dressed as a dominatrix and she's like, 'People come to me for all sorts of things, real sickos for nipple pinching, back scratching, butt play. In fact one of the scum is here tonight,' and she looks down at an audience list and says, 'Would Jason Segel please stand up.'
"I didn't know this thing is audience participation. So I stand up and there's my ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend looking at me, laughing hysterically, just cackling.
"The woman proceeds to make me get on my knees and bark like a dog and say out loud in front of my ex-girlfriend over and over, 'No woman would ever want to be with me.' It was awful."

How I Met Your Mother star Jason Segel fears he has ruined his dating life after revealing all in his new movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
The single Knocked Up star shows off his genitals in the film and now fears any future girlfriend will use the movie for research before agreeing to romance him.
He says, "I thought it would be fun. I thought I'd walk out naked and they'd yell, 'Action,' but no, it's not like that at all. You show up and realise you're about to be naked in front of 300 people.
"I also had a realisation right before I walked out that did not help... there aren't too many women out there who just love a small penis. That's all I kept thinking.
"The (censors) Mpaa made a specific rule that as long as it's flaccid, it's still an 'R' rating, but you don't want to be too flaccid!
"At one point there were seven penis shots and now we've got it down to four. There was one shot that really disturbed me. One of the shots they framed was just half my penis and it looked really, really weird. People fainted and cried.
"I'm interested to see how it affects my life. It's weird when my family sees it. I saw it with my mother at the first test screening which was horribly embarrassing.
"I don't know how it's gonna affect my dating life. It'll be like, 'You've already seen me naked!'"

Writing the new Muppets movie is a dream come true for funnyman Jason Segel - he grew up wanting to be Kermit The Frog.
The actor/writer begged Disney bosses to let him pen the new film, and when they initially turned him down he wowed them with his knowledge of the loveable puppet stars.
The Knocked Up star says, "I've had a fascination with puppets my entire life. I remember thinking that Kermit The Frog was Tom Hanks. He was the everyman, like Jimmy Stewart.
"I wanted to be him, which was weird because I knew he was a puppet but I still wanted to be Kermit The Frog.
"I went to Disney and I said, 'Guys, I would like to write the new Muppet movie,' and there was a weird spattering of laughter in the room.
"Then I pitched it to them and gave them my Muppets knowledge and they brought the pitch, so it's a little boy's dream come true."

Leslie Mann's daughter was so excited her mother had a kissing scene with Zac Efron in upcoming movie Seventeen Again, she licked the actress' face when she got home from work.
Mann, who is married to director Judd Apatow and is best known for her roles in The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up, plays Efron's wife in the new film.
And her 10-year-old daughter Maude was desperate to get a taste of the High School Musical hunk.
Mann, 35, says, "My daughter Maude, who's 10, is in love with Zac Efron and I just did a movie with him called Seventeen Again where he plays a grown man in a 17-year-old's body. And he plays my husband, so we got to kiss, which was very exciting for Maude.
"When I got home from work after doing the kissing scene, she ran up to me and licked my face because she wanted to taste Zac Efron's spit.
"Zac is 20 by the way, he's not 17, so it's not as creepy."
Mann adds, "I always thought it was creepy when older movie actors would have really young love interests. I always thought that was really gross.
"But now I totally get it."

Actress Anne Hathaway turned down the lead role in romantic comedy Knocked Up because she deemed the movie "too radical", according to the film's star Katherine Heigl.
The Grey's Anatomy beauty landed the role of Alison Scott opposite Seth Rogen after Hathaway, who was the original choice of director Judd Apatow, refused to take the part.
But Heigl was only too happy to be cast - and was even delighted when audiences were shocked by graphic footage of a baby's head crowning during the movie's birthing scene.
The 30-year-old says, "I think Anne found the film a little too radical especially with the shot at the end!
"Seeing a baby's head poking through was a little strong but the reaction of the audience at that point was so extreme. They just screamed - especially the men!"

Actress Leslie Mann and her husband Judd Apatow sleep in separate rooms - because the filmmaker snores too loudly.
The Knocked Up couple - Mann starred in the hit movie, which was directed by Apatow - have been married for years and have two children together.
But Mann can't get any sleep if Apatow is by her side.
She says, "We don't sleep in the same bed. He snores really loud.
"It's not like that soft, soothing snore that kind of lulls you to sleep. It's more intermittent, it starts, and stops, and you don't know when it's going to start up again... It sounds like he's choking on his own tongue or something. It's not sexy."
Mann jokes, "I sleep with my little one (daughter) - she pees a lot - and we sometimes forget to put diapers on her so I wake up covered in pee. But that's better than snoring. At least it's quiet."

Knocked Up star Katherine Heigl has given up her Mormon beliefs as she is "too lazy" to follow a religion.
The actress was born a Christian but her family converted to the Church of the Latter-Day Saints after the death of her older brother Jason when Heigl was seven years old.
And despite her strict Mormon upbringing, the star insists she has since abandoned the faith because she just doesn't have enough time to devote herself fully to the practice.
She says, "I still love the theology of the Mormon religion and I think it is a wonderful way to grow up. But I think any real commitment to religion takes time, effort and energy.
"I just got really lazy and it's hard to get yourself up on a Sunday morning."

Knocked Up star Katherine Heigl is sick of Hollywood's obsession with the thin and beautiful - because she is tired of constantly trying to fit in to the movie industry's ideal image.
The Grey's Anatomy beauty, who has become one of the industry's leading new actresses, understands she is required to look good on-screen, but can't seem to attain Hollywood's high standards because of continually changing trends for the body beautiful.
She says, "I understand what it is I am trying to sell and what it is I want people to buy. I'm never going to be a size two (U.K. size six) but I do try to maintain a certain look that appeals.
"Unfortunately, it keeps changing - it went from uber-thin and then that was wrong, then it went to curvy, and then that was wrong. It's like, 'God, what do you want?' I can't reform myself every time the trends change."
And the star, who was forced to lose weight for her breakthrough movie Knocked Up, finds it strange how Hollywood can't except her just the way she is.
She adds, "I always thought I was normal. And I was normal, but just not in Hollywood."

27 Dresses, starring Katherine Heigl of Knocked Up and Grey's Anatomy fame, is receiving a good dressing down from most critics. "This by-the-numbers romantic comedy is the kind of rote exercise that can give a genre a bad name," says Los Angeles Times critic Carina Chocano. Joe Morgenstern in the Wall Street Journal gives it just that, dismissing it as a "half-hatched chick flick" -- although he does credit Heigl for managing "to make her character endearing, as well as borderline -- believable." Indeed, Elizabeth Weitzman in the New York Daily News comments, "Anyone watching this appealing actress march toward the inevitable will wonder why she's settling for so much less than she deserves." And Claudia Puig in USA Today says that the movie is like one of the 27 bridesmaid dresses featured in the film: "frothy, predictable and over the top."

Nominees for the Writers Guild of America Awards have been announced, with a few suprises and notable omissions. Original Screenplay nods went to four comedies -- Juno, Knocked Up, Lars and the Real Girl, and The Savages -- and one drama, Michael Clayton, while the films up for Adapted Screenplay are four critical favorites -- The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Into the Wild, No Country for Old Men, and There Will Be Blood -- and one surprising left-field contender, the thriller Zodiac, released back in March. Missing from contention were such high-profile films as Atonement, Charlie Wilson's War, and Sweeney Todd, which were also passed over for the Directors Guild of America awards. Documentary nominees were The Camden 28, Nanking, No End in Sight, The Rape of Europa, Sicko and Taxi to the Dark Side. The WGA Awards will be handed out on Saturday, February 9th.

Actress Katherine Heigl is planning to quit acting in 2009 so she can start a huge family with new husband Josh Kelley. The couple - who married on December 23 - both want five or six children, and Heigl, 29, is itching to be a mother as soon as possible. The Knocked Up star says, "I'd like to start talking children seriously in the next year, but Josh feels more like two years, so we'll probably do a year and a half. I'm excited about having a big family. I'm talking five or six."
