Poll: Which Golden Globe nominee will win best comedy/musical picture?

Normally, Golden Globe voters automatically choose successful musicals in the race for best comedy/musical picture. Past champs include "Sweeney Todd," "Dreamgirls," "Walk the Line," "Chicago," "Moulin Rouge," "Evita," etc. However, box office blockbuster "Mamma Mia" lost last year to "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," probably because film critics weren't dancing in the aisles alongside crazed moviegoers.
That means "Nine" might be in trouble at the Golden Globes this year, if it doesn't rally soon with reviewers. It's only scoring 26% at RottenTomatoes.
Was the anti-"Mamma Mia" vote last year a slap at Meryl Streep? If so, she's got two films in contention in this category now: "It's Complicated" and "Julie & Julia."
Globers don't usually endorse laffers with a fratboy sensibility like "The Hangover." They didn't even nominate "Knocked Up" or "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," but I hear that Hfpa members are popping champagne corks over this one this year.
"(500) Days of Summer" was a surprise inclusion,

'The Hangover' Arrives On Home Video To Golden Globe Noms And An Increasingly Busy Cast

Before "The Hangover" became one of the biggest success stories of 2009, it was just a Warner Bros. comedy starring that guy who cheats from "He's Just Not That Into You," the dude from "The Office," and some short, fat guy with a beard.
Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis weren't putting all their eggs in one basket, because I'm fairly certain none of them expected "The Hangover" to gross over $459 million in the worldwide box office. In fact, the stars of "The Hangover" have been some of the busiest guys around Hollywood over the past year. Here's a look at what else they've been up to since "The Hangover" hit theaters in June -- beyond, of course, preparing for 2011's "The Hangover 2."
Bradley Cooper
Though Bradley Cooper surprised audiences and critics with his comedic chops in "The Hangover," he chose not to return to the bro-comedy formula. Cooper's

Jack Black & Illumination Entertainment Invest in Cryptozoology

Animation films, whether it’s the new school CGI or old school hand drawn, have always been popular with kids of all ages and in recent years, have become fun for adults to watch as well; so, it’s no surprise to read a story over at Variety announcing a new CGI feature film involving Jack Black. Writer Jason Micallef pitched an idea to Illumination Entertainment which is an extension of Universal headed by Chris Meledandri.
Micallef’s pitch in set in the world of Cryptozoology, which is the study and search for unknown, yet often talked about, animals or beings. My guess is it will include “monsters” like the Yeti, Sasquatch, Bigfoot, The Loch Ness Monster and maybe even mermaids or dragons. Black, who at one time was thought to be voicing a character, will now only be producing with business partner Ben Cooley via their production company Electric Dynamite.

Part 5: From Sir Tim Berners-Lee to Phil Mitchell
Sir Tim Berners-lee Invented the internet. Omg!
Nice one, Sir T. You came up with a useful, unifying means of global communication that changed the way we went about everything, from news to wanking. Then celebrity bloggers appeared to combine the two: Drunken Stepfather, The Superficial, Dlisted and the grotesque grande dame of them all, Perez "Zzzz!" Hilton, made stars out of socialites, turned the upskirt shot into a goldmine and made being a no-limits prick about everyone acceptable by calling it "snark". You enjoy that knighthood.

DVD Review: ‘Paper Heart’ Intriguingly Blurs Line Between Reality, Fiction

Chicago – Some actors are so good that it’s easy to take their work for granted. Take Michael Cera, the veteran child actor-turned-unlikely teen heartthrob. From his breakout work in “Arrested Development,” to his crowd-pleasing performances in “Superbad” and “Juno,” Cera has created a comic persona as indelible as Woody Allen’s.
The sweetly neurotic vulnerability he exudes is so authentic, it’s easy for audiences to confuse the actor with the characters he regularly portrays. Is he a brilliant actor, or is he simply playing himself (which itself is no easy feat)? Such questions lie at the deceptive heart of Nicholas Jasenovec’s intriguing and infuriating romantic comedy.
DVD Rating: 3.0/5.0
“Paper Heart” purports itself to be documentary about one young woman’s quest to discover the nature of love. The woman is Charlyne Yi, a comedian and performance artist not unlike Cera (she’s best known for her scene-stealing

Does the World Need an Entourage Movie?

As one of HBO’s flagship series, Entourage has a complex reputation. It hit a self-reflexive high in its second season (the Aquaman years), but since then it’s been an on-and-off source of grumbling and eye rolls among fans. It can seem like an eternity before anything actually happens, and the series is often curiously out of touch. The most recent season, for example, began with an episode where the characters talk about nothing but Knocked Up, a movie that was a hot cultural item…two summers ago....

Watch This: Adam Scott & Brittany Snow in The Vicious Kind

Another indie film potentially lost in the mix. The first official trailer for The Vicious Kind has debuted over on YouTube (via SlashFilm). This stars a bittersweet Adam Scott (the male nurse from Knocked Up), a super sweet Brittany Snow (the hot blonde girl from Hairspray), and a freakin' sweet J.K. Simmons (who plays J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man). You probably haven't ever heard of this, but I suggest checking out the trailer, it doesn't look too bad. It seems kind of like an awkward mix of an indie drama and mumblecore comedy, but that could be a good thing. I think I'll check it out when I get the chance. What about you?

Traditionally, the desert city has been synonymous - both on screen and off - with sin, tragedy and despair. But as this year's smash comedy The Hangover, now out on DVD, highlighted, it's increasingly an arena for a new, Disneyfied version of vice. Paul MacInnes reports
There are lots of tigers in Las Vegas. But, try as you might, it's hard to coax one back to your hotel room. Mainly, they live in zoos; zoos like the one in the Mirage Hotel that's named after Siegfried & Roy, the German-born magicians who became inextricably linked to the beasts after a seven-year-old called Montecore bit Roy on the neck. Sometimes the tigers live in private homes. But, either way, they're not for hire. And you try lifting one out of its cage.
The sight of a roaring tiger in a bathroom at Caesar's Palace is one of the most memorable moments in The Hangover,

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice Teaser Trailer is Magical

Disney has released the first official trailer for next summer’s magically epic adaptation of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, a role Mickey Mouse played the part of back in the 1940 animated movie, Fantasia. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is most commonly associated with Disney and Mickey but the story actually comes from the 18th century German poem Der Zauberlehrling written by Goethe.
Where the Fantasia scene stuck pretty close to the source material, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice seems to stray from it -- though that doesn’t mean this won’t still be a fun summer flick. Here is the official description of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice as per Disney:
“Walt Disney Studios, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Jon Turteltaub, the creators of the National Treasure franchise, present The Sorcerer’S Apprentice — an innovative and epic comedy adventure about a sorcerer and his hapless apprentice who are swept into the center

The film stars Nicolas Cage, on delightfully wacky form as Balthazar Blake, a master sorcerer in modern-day New York trying to defend the city from his arch nemesis Maxim Hovarth, played by Alfred Molina.
Balthazar can't do it alone, so he recruits Dave Stutler (Knocked Up's Jay Baruchel), a seemingly average guy who demonstrates hidden potential as his reluctant protégé.

There goes Nicolas Cage again. Just when Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans almost had us convinced that the man hadn't forgotten how to act, and the prospect of him teaching a teen girl to kill in Kick-Ass had us wondering about a Cage resurgence, he goes and does a movie like this.
Walt Disney Pictures and Apple have revealed the first trailer for The Sorcerer's Apprentice, from producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director John Turtletaub. The film stars Cage as a real-life sorcerer with some wicked cool powers (as seen in the trailer below) and Knocked Up's Jay Baruchel as his apprentice. Alfred Molina stars as an evil guy with evil powers and Teresa Palmer as an attractive girl who we can only assume steals the young man's heart. Monica Bellucci and Toby Kebbell also star.
I'm hard pressed to come up with analysis at such a late hour, so

'Romancing the Stone' Moves Towards Production

Last December we reported that 20th Century Fox had hired Daniel McDermott (Eagle Eye) to write a remake of the 1984 Michael Douglas/Kathleen Turner film, Romancing the Stone. We were a tad snide with our editorializing.
With increasingly good reason, it would seem. Pajiba is reporting that the film is moving forward, and that Robert Luketic (Legally Blone, The Ugly Truth) could be tapped to direct the project. Luketic is perhaps not the most respected director in Hollywood. As Pajiba describes it: He directed The Ugly Truth and Monster-in-Law, two very bad movies that apparently allowed him to fall on his ass backwards up the Hollywood ladder.
Luketic also has Barbarella in development, a film in which few seem to have any confidence, chiefly because of his involvement.
All of which begs the question: Why bother with this Romancing the Stone remake at all, since it's likely to be just

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Funny People’ Disappointing Movie, Amazing Blu-Ray

Chicago – Whatever problems I may have with Judd Apatow’s “Funny People” (and I’ll get to those, trust me), the Blu-Ray release for the comedy is easily one of the most extensive and impressive of the year with hours of bonus material and some amazing archival footage that makes the package a must-own for fans of the film. If only the movie itself lived up to such an impressive HD treatment.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0
Adam Sandler stars as the mega-successful George Simmons, a former stand-up and comedy star who is told that he doesn’t have long to live. He partners up with a struggling comedian named Ira (Seth Rogen) and heads back out to clubs to find what he loved about comedy in the first place. He eventually crosses paths with the one who got away (Leslie Mann) and learns a lesson or two about life. Or three or

Actress Katherine Heigl has given 25 Chihuahuas a special early Christmas gift - their lives.
The pooches, all strays, were due to be put to sleep when the Knocked Up star learned of their plight and helped find them a new home.
According to People magazine, Heigl and her mother's Jason Debus Heigl Foundation donated $25,000 (£15,625) so the pets could be flown from Los Angeles to their new families in Boston, Massachusetts.
The dogs will be made available for adoption at the Humane Society for Greater Nashua and Salem Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire.
Humane Society director Karen Bill tells the publication, "All 25 would have been euthanized if we didn't take them. We're just so happy to be saving their lives."

"Nine" looks like a good bet to win the Golden Globe for best comedy/musical picture. Voters almost always go for successful musicals here ("Sweeney Todd," "Dreamgirls," "Walk the Line," "Chicago," "Moulin Rouge," "Evita"). But wait! They spurned "Mamma Mia" for "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" last year, but that tuner wasn't respected by film critics. "The Hangover" could be a threat, which is surprising. Usually, members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. don't take Yankee frat-boy comedies seriously. Globe voters didn't nominate "Knocked Up" or "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," but inside sources say members are toasting "The Hangover" with three cheers. We don't know yet what their reaction is to "It's Complicated." It's being screened for Hfpa members...

This past summer cinephiles, comic-book-geeks and Nic Cage fans alike were excited to hear the news that the Oscar winner was set to play a mobster in Seth Rogen’s movie version of “The Green Hornet.” It was an announcement that seemed to promise a return to the edgier, quirkier, over-the-top Cage that endeared himself to fans during the first decade of his career before movies like “The Family Man” and “National Treasure” came along. Oddly enough, that return to form would instead be marked by a different film — and Cage couldn’t be happier.
“It’s not more fun, but it’s kind of relieving,” Cage told MTV News of playing an over-the-top character in “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans,” which has given the actor his best reviews in years and might just get some awards-season talk. “It’s relieving to get it out; you go through

Peter Bradshaw: Richard Brody's list of the decade's finest movies tops my chart

In this season for critical lists, the Best of the Decade survey from the New Yorker's movies editor genuinely stands out
It's the end of the year, and for film critics this is the season for making lists – the best films of the year and, now of course, the best films of the decade. All the papers are doing it and we here are in the process of drawing up our list of the decade's top 100 movies for guardian.co.uk/film. Making lists appeals to the nerdy, Hornby-esque and anally retentive side of all of us. And of course it offers huge opportunities for – whisper it – showing off.
The seasoned list-maker will know how to combine the obscure choices with the mainstream ones, and this latter consideration is important. The seasoned lister knows that the more MoR candidates provide the resonant C-major chords which give solidity and plausibility to the list.

It's hard to believe, but Judd Apatow, the mega-filmmaker who has changed the face of Hollywood comedy, has only directed three films. Having made his mark in television ("Freaks & Geeks," "Larry Sanders") and some screenwriting, Apatow finally exploded into the theatrical world on the back of 2005's "The 40 Year Old Virgin." "Knocked Up" would follow in 2007, and then in 2009, "Funny People," a decidedly more mature comedy that straddled serious dramatic elements. Now arriving on DVD and Blu-ray, will the pic -- which stars Adam Sandler as a dying comedian who mentors younger upstart Seth Rogen -- finally grab a wider fanbase than it found in cinemas?
"Funny People" features a strong audio and video transfer, and comes in both theatrical and unrated versions. Extras are plentiful as well, with the two-disc edition featuring filmmaker commentary, on-set diaries, gag reels, deleted and extended scenes, featurettes on subjects like stand-up, vintage prank

AICN’s Harry Knowles has long cultivated close friendships with powerful filmmakers. Peter Jackson showed him The Lovely Bones before any one else, and now I hear that James Cameron, who often calls Knowles when he wants to promote something, is trying to override studio Twentieth Century Fox’s antipathy toward the Austin-based webmaster (who likes to blast co-chairman Tom Rothman) by giving him Avatar to screen at his annual December 24-hour film marathon Butt-Numb-a-Thon. Blu-Ray Review: ‘The Ugly Truth’ is Neither Funny Nor Romantic

Chicago – Here’s an alleged romantic comedy as clueless about romance as it is about comedy. It has a premise designed to illustrate how women think with their minds, while men think with their nether regions. Yet the male and female leads of “The Ugly Truth” are practically indistinguishable from each other. They’re both overly judgmental, profoundly self-absorbed, and thoroughly reprehensible. Neither of them would dream of dating a member of the opposite sex that didn’t meet their rigid list of superficial expectations based on physical features. These two people are clearly made for each other.
Blu-Ray Rating: 1.5/5.0
Too bad they’re played by Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler, two of the most energetic and generally appealing stars in Hollywood. Their inherent likability directly conflicts with their unlikable characters. Heigl plays a TV producer who has all the warmth of Kate Gosselin, while Butler plays a local cable
