My brother picked up Samurai Gun Volume One while we were Christmas shopping out at Media Play. It looked interesting, and the rating made me want to watch even more. All the anime I see lately is generic. Episodes of Inu-Yasha have become generic. "Hey! I fight a monster, get a piece of the jewel, don't confess my true love to the girl, and make some 'witty' remarks!" And that's all there is to that episode. All the anime now seems to be about romance, big robots, or samurai. But now; we have an anime to change this. And the rating being a TV-MA should attract any adult anime viewer. Last night, I sat down to watch the first disc of Samurai Gun and was stunned. This is one of the most vulgar anime's I've ever come across - not that that's a bad thing! But this is definitely not for the kiddies. Tons of bad language left and right, bloody violence, somewhat explicit sexuality. But it should attract fairly mature adults. But what is it? Samurai Gun is the story of a loner named Ichimatsu who lives in a small village, who runs to the brothels by night for whores. But what he does before that is even more incredible. He is the Samurai Gun, a man sworn to protect villagers from the cruel, vicious Shogun empire. The Shogun have become evil, and have begun raping,m torturing, and killing innocent people. Samurai Gun is there to protect. But what is his motivation? Why does he do these things? Is he naturally a good man? While that may be true, years ago when he was a wee boy, a Shogun forced him to watch the death of his mother in cold blood. Ichimatsu was sworn revenge, and his killings are deadly. But what makes this different from any other anime? The storyline is complex and unfolds with humorous dialogue and sharp wit. This isn't generic and bland, we see no fighting robots, no dragonslayers, no Inu-Yasha's. What we do get is bizarre, but cool like flowing wine. Kazuhito Kakuchi has given us something original and amazing to behold. This 'samurai' doesn't even specialize in using a sword, he uses a rare pistol that is extremely deadly, leaving the bloodiest of bullet-holes. In the first episode, we are tempted into thinking he enjoys killing these men for revenge of his family, but in the second, we are quickly betrayed and we learn from it. We learn that he does this because he has to. He does it to make it all right. But he doesn't want to. He is like the Vash The Stampede of The Fall Of The Shogunate Empire. Ichimatsu may not like to shoot to kill, but he does it with no mercy and strikes down viciously against his enemies. Again, this is not generic, and it is not bland. So why is it average? While the dialogue is funny and somewhat witty, it starts to get repetitive with the same old-same old language that could've come straight from Tarantino-School. While excessive bad language while turn away most viewers, it doesn't for me. But be warned, if you flinch at films like Pulp Fiction, Casino, and 8 Mile, then this is not for you. Once they start using bad language every other sentence, it throws off the beauty of the actual scene.

The characters are somewhat unsympathizing and we don't get a great deal of background. Ichimatsu may be our main character, but what anime directors need to realize is that it's okay to have a mysterious character, but come on, we're going to need LOTS more information. If Ichimatsu were to die on Disc 3, I wouldn't pity for him. I have no reasons. As of yet, I haven't any reason to care for him at all. As far as I know, he's a lapdog of revenge with good aim who likes a prostitute every now and then. But he is interesting.

So, if you happen to be strolling down the local video rental store, or maybe even catch this for cheap, I recommend you rent it or buy it. Why for cheap? Many people will be turned away because there aren't all that many 'explosions' and 'sex scenes' and 'witty one-liners'. But if you're a mature anime fan, you might just wanna check it out. Whether it's up your alley or not is for you, this is just t help you out. One must really watch it to get behind their opinion. It's complex and thought-provoking.
