"Americana" must be the title that the 3 midgety leprechauns from Green Day more-or-less stole for their self-inspired "American Idiots" album.
So Offspring consider themselves qualified enough for making social/political commentary in their songs and videos? Well, you know, once Bono opened the floodgates, just about every and any barely educated nincompoop has the undeniable right to espouse their retarded political beliefs in pop.
And it wouldn't even matter much if this annoyingly awful bad had anything to offer musically. Granted, they didn't make it overnight like oochie-goochie-goo fetus punksters Green Day, i.e. Offspring ARE men as far as I can tell, not zit-faced boys from rich families. However, Offspring's early stuff is pretty terrible too: generic a-la Bad Religion la-di-da pop punk for larger masses.
However, as soon as they signed on a major label they basically stooped down to Green Day's level (which wasn't that much lower, as explained). "Pretty Fly" may just be the worst song of that year, and one of the most annoying, cretinous audio monstrosities ever produced. Besides, how is the video for that song funny? White kids trying to be hip-hop are only marginally more ridiculous than blacks who want to do it. There is actually even latent racism here by Offspring: they suggest that it is okay for blacks to speak in bad English and behave like pseudo-pimps and retarded gangsters in their hip-hop fantasies(?), while white people should stay with their proper grammar (except for white trash) and decent jobs...? Ts, ts, ts... Not politically correct at all, if you think about it.
"Why Don't You Get A B-Job?" reminds me of a very old song, just can't remember which. Those guys must be all dead, otherwise they could have sued these "hip punksters" for melody-theft. Totally unoriginal, as everything Offspring have ever done.
However, the rest of these videos/songs aren't much better: all of them are horrible, brainless, chewing-gum MTV rubbish.
The singer, a Hetfield-look-alike contest winner, has a most unpleasant semi-shout that should be able to pierce ear-drums at a dangerous enough proximity.
Going back to "Why Don't You Get A Job?"; that is rich coming from lazy bums who formed a crappy punk band because they were too lazy to work themselves i.e. get REAL JOBS. Had they not succeeded in music-biz - which could have easily happened - they probably would have been in unemployment lines, mooching off the "Americana" state... Or perhaps the song mocks those who demand that people get work? Either way, they shouldn't talk...
Then again, Bono Vox from U2...
