‘Flash Gordon’ Heads Back to Mongo Via ‘Predator’ Producer and ‘Star Trek’ Writers

22 April 2014 6:54 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

With Star Wars heading back to theaters, it’s only natural that Flash Gordon follow suit. Ironically, it was the 1930s Flash Gordon serial that was a big influence on George Lucas, whose Star Wars movies then seemed to have an influence on the release of the campy Flash Gordon feature in 1980. This time, though, another adaptation of Alex Raymond’s sci-fi comic strip will be more tied to the Star Trek franchise. According to The Hollywood Reporter, hot new screenwriters J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, who worked on the next Trek installment, have been hired to script this other reboot. They’re working off a treatment by George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau), who’ll be producing with John Davis, of Predator, Waterworld and Norbit fame. That sounds like it’s in decent hands, though maybe hands that are too serious. And a Flash Gordon movie that’s taken seriously is going to be hard to accept »

2014 Oscar Primer: Makeup and Hairstyling

Dallas Buyers Club, Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa and The Lone Ranger. Raise your hand if these were the films you had pegged throughout the year to be named Best Makeup and Hairstyling by the Academy. Not many, I imagine, would have even considered these to make the shortlist. But does Dallas Buyers Club have the edge because it’s a Best Picture nominee?

In the history of this category (1981-now), Best Picture nominated films have accounted for 20 nominations and 8 wins. That averages out to 2 nominations every 3 years and a win every four years. Not a terrible percentage for a category whose nominees have to contend with a branch that is more adventurous than the others. Over the years, I’ve come to appreciate that this is a branch that is unafraid to honor every type of makeup and hairstyling, regardless of genre or film quality. »

'The Lone Ranger' joins list of movies nominated for both Razzies and Oscars

16 January 2014 11:58 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

On Wednesday, The Lone Ranger received multiple Razzie nominations, including the notorious Worst Picture nod. The next day, The Lone Ranger was nominated for an Oscar, for best makeup.

This isn’t the first movie to get nods from both ends of the spectrum. Since the Razzies first began back in 1981, 47 movies have been nominated for both “awards”– some even for the same exact person or song. Here’s a look at the club The Lone Ranger just joined:

Oscar nods: Film editing, music (original song) for “People Alone” with music by Lalo Schifrin and lyrics by Wilbur »

‘Ride Along’ Review: Kevin Hart and Ice Cube Can Overcome Bad Guys, But Not a Bad Script (Video)

15 January 2014 9:00 AM, PST | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Comedian-turned-actor Kevin Hart has expressed his desire to have a career like Eddie Murphy’s, but anyone who has sat through recent Murphy big-screen vehicles like “A Thousand Words,” “Norbit,” “Meet Dave” or “Imagine That” might put Hart’s aspirations in the be-careful-what-you-wish-for column. And while the mismatched-buddy-cop formula of “48 Hrs.” gave Murphy’s career an effective kickstart back in the 1980s, Hart’s similarly themed “Ride Along” feels like the copy of the copy of the copy of Murphy’s influential hit. Instead of Murphy’s wiseacre convict, we get Hart as Ben, a motor-mouthed video game fanatic who »
