The good Bollywood movie that almost was!
26 December 2005 | by See all my reviews

This movie seemed like a promising departure from the Bollywood genre (read: Crap-O-Masala) fare. Its a remake from a Tamil film the original story for which was written by ex-actor Kamal Hasan.

In a nutshell, the basic problem with this film is a weak story. In the opening scenes, the stereotypical Bihari angle has been overdone. The lead character has been miscast -- in what is a poor village, this guy looks like a hefty, well-built (and well-fed) type who likely spends 2+ hours at Golds Gym everyday! The humor didn't quite work, some of the sequences esp. in the first half are dragged. They should have worked a lot more on the screenplay (very weak, again). Dialogues are pithy and inappropriate some times. Again, the overall balance is missing.

The people with the least footage -- Ramji's sis Parvati, friend Pappu, as well as the F-in-law and few others, have acted well. Madhavan didn't come across as Bihari at all and probably suited the Tamil role better. Samita Bangargi is a HOTTIE (wow, this one's gonna take off). She acted well too. Editing is OK, couldn't really have made a difference. Thats what happens when a plot is concocted around a weak storyline: it fails to propel. Otherwise, production values and technical details are OK.

As an aside, the producer of this movie earlier made some porn flicks with Amitraj bros. and the Jug mundra dude. Not that it matters but its possible she may've been unwilling (broke?!) to shell out big bucks on a "risky" project with an "unproven team"! (get it?)

All in all, better than many a Bollywood bore.
