A surprisingly good film about self-discovery.

Warning: Spoilers
When I saw this film at the Newport International Film Festival, it was one of about a dozen films in a "Shorts" program. So I had come to the screening not having read the plots too deeply or who was starring in them. I made the assumption it would be mostly unknowns.

So imagine my surprise upon seeing Lauren Graham awkwardly getting into a car with three black cross-dressers. Initially the tension was such that I thought that the filmmaker was going to go through the typical stereotypical racial scenarios. As such, I had my guard up to not like the movie.

But as the movie progressed I saw how the writer had other ideas. As Lauren Graham's character interact with the other occupants of the car, she realizes that, despite their MANY differences, there were experiences that Lauren's character could learn from. It re-reminded of why I go to the Film Festival: to see truly independent film making that cuts away at the tired story molds that Hollywood puts out and throws them in the trash. Before long I was smiling, and by the end I was laughing and satisfied with this very different gem of a movie.

Kudos to Jenny Bicks (writer and director). Here's to seeing more of your works in the future!

Gnome is truly a wonderful short.

Now the reason I watched this at first was because it had Lauren Graham in it and I am a huge Lauren Graham fan. However, the message to the story made me love this even more. It is truly a great shout out to female independence and individuality. I personally think we need more of that in this world a proverbial "UP YOUR'S" to society. And this short does that. And its all based around a gnome (if you didn't get that from the title). I also how in this short you just see women come together to face their fears, even though they seem so different in almost every way. I would suggest this movie to anyone. It truly is wonderful. The talent in the writing and on screen is amazing.

Warning: Spoilers
Fans of Lauren Graham will definitely enjoy this short film.

And even if you've never heard of her (I feel sorry for you if you haven't) you can still enjoy this because it is that good.

From start to finish its exciting and interesting.

And you can go watch it on YOUTUBE! Like now!

Okay, so apparently that isn't enough for you to go watch it and I must add more so here we go.

She eats food from a place a she used to go to. She crashes her car. The transsexuals jip her. She gets desperate. She meets the GNOME! She becomes friends with the transsexuals. She goes home.

Okay thats like the whole story. But at the same time, its not. So either way, you must go watch it. Again, Like Now!

solid short

It's tough to make a good short film. Even the ones that I have seen with famous actors and done by famous directors can often be horrible. GNOME, however, is quite a pleasant surprise. Lauren Graham (the one and only) takes her role and knocks it out of the park. Playing a less spunky, more upper class version of Lorelai Gilmore, she radiates from start to finish. Her expressions are priceless, and she provides a prime example of why good actors make or break movies. Written and directed Jenny Burke (an acclaimed TV writer from her filmography), the story is guided with a beautiful simplicity that a lot of film students/aspiring Micheal Bays tend to lack. In fact, the movie reminds me of something Hal Ashby would have done if he had ever been infused with a SEX IN THE CITY-suburban brain chip.
