This series will be forever remembered for a badly blown call by first base umpire Don Derrikinger. Jorge Orta of Kansas City hit a slow roller to first base. The ball was tossed to relief pitcher Todd Worrell of the Cardinals, who appeared to step on first base well before Orta. Orta was called safe, and Worrell protested, followed by Cardinals manager Whitey Herzog. The Royals rally continued, and they took the series the next day in Game seven.
