Wrestlemania 22 Review, Cena retains, Undertaker undefeated, More surprises
30 April 2006 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Wrestlemania 22 didn't look good on paper. The matches for the most part appeared lame. The actual show however was different. Just like an NFL game can look bad on paper then turn out to be a great game, the WWE put on a good show last night. Here is my mini review of Wrestlemania. The Undertaker continued his undefeated streak with his win over Mark Henry. No big surprises here, but the fact they had a passable match was surprising. There were a couple of big surprises in store though, one is the John Cena/Triple H match. I thought for sure that HHH would regain the title at Wrestlemania. Cena to me just isn't championship material. WWE showed their commitment to him though by letting him beat HHH cleanly via a tap out. We'll have to see how this plays out. The other big surprise to me was Rey Mysterio being the new Heavyweight champion of Smackdown. Yes I know it's supposed to be a feel good moment because of Eddie Guerrero, but I don't see Rey carrying the title for too long. If WWE would build up the cruiser weight title like it should be, then Rey could carry that title with pride. To have Rey be the heavyweight champion just isn't believable or sustainable. No offense to Rey, he's extremely talented, but he's not a heavyweight champion. The money in the bank match ended well. The entire match had some cool high spots and the right man won. Rick Flair was my expected winner, but pushing RVD is the right thing to do. He has paid his dues time and again, so it was a good move. Vince McMahon vs Micheals was great in that it told a story without too many high risk moves. Seeing Shawn do his Dgeneration X crotch chop moves was kinda cool too, that brought back some memories. Other than that the show felt like filler material. JBL vs Benoit was kinda lame, but JBL needs a title to hold onto so he can BLEEP everyone off. The Boogeyman is all hype and no go in the ring. His match with Booker was short and thats good. I have no idea what they'll do with him next. He has zero talent in the ring. WWE needs to find a credible tag team to compete with Kane and Big show. Right now there are no believable teams to beat them. The Trish Stratus and Mikie James match was better than I thought. It was an actual wrestling match, not an eye candy match. Mickie is one of the better actors WWE has right now. Her "psycho" title reign should be entertaining. Having Jim Ross back doing commentary was awesome as well. He was definitely the best choice to have announcing this event. Overall this wasn't a bad Wrestlemania, it was actually pretty good. The matches had a lot of energy and action, with the exception being that horrible pillow fight match with Torrie and Candice. Please WWE keep those two out of in ring competition. While this wasn't the best Wrestlemania ever, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I'd give it a 6.5 out of 10. In comparison I gave Wrestlemania 18, which featured Hogan vs the Rock a 9. Like I said, Wrestlemania 22 wasn't the greatest, but it was good.
